One of the most brilliant rock bands of the 90's(in my opinion) with their originality and they have a song for everyone of my moods. Almost everyone of my poems I wrote while listening to Billy Corgan's voice! Even though they are now disbanded I still love them! So here are some tid bits on them! |

In the beginning: 'Smashing Pumpkins' was formed in Chicago(1988) with Billy Corgan(guitarist/vocals) and James Iha(guitarist) playing along to a drum machine. Corgan met D'arcy Wretzky(bass) after a SP show and soon after they hired Jimmy Chamberlin(drums). Their first single was 'I am one' and they later released 'Tristessa' spawning a label bidding war. They created a large fan base by opening for bands such as 'Red Hot Chilli Peppers' and Pearl Jam. Siamese Dream was their breakthrough album and Mellon Collie and the infinate sadness sold over 4 million copies. They headed the festival 'Lollapalooza' in '94. Their touring keyboard artist Jonathan Melvoin died of a heroin overdose in '96 and soon after Chamberlin was fired because of his drug addiction. As a replacement for chamberlin, Matt Walker(Filter) toured with the band temporarily. D'arcy left the band to pursue a other interests and step out of Corgan's shadow in 2000, meanwhile Chamberlin cleaned up his act and rejoined the band(also in 2000). Melissa Auf De Maur formerly of 'Hole' replaced D'arcy. Only 25 copies of their album 'Machina 2' were made, Corgan encouraged people to distribute mp3s as a goodbye gift to fans. 'The smashing Pumpkins played their last show on Dec 2nd at Club Metro in Chicago. |
