The 1999-2000 season was the first time that the Henderson Rangers had entered an Under 18 team to the NZAFA competition. The competition differs from the Senior competition as the Juniors play seven a side on a full field as well as some small rule changes that will allow the Juniors to learn the game with confidence. The Rangers team was made up from Liston, Rutherford and Waitakere Colleges with some players coming from a small religious school located within the Waitakere area.
Pre-season training started for the ten committed players in late September, during which time the players had to learn from scratch how to play American Football. An advantage that the players had was a strong grounding that they had in contact sports such as rugby and league.
The 6th of November saw the Rangers playing their first game against the physically imposing Manukau Islanders team. The game was a true test of the players confidence and they emerged from the nil all encounter with a strong belief in their ability.
The following week saw the Rangers Juniors pitted against last years defending champions, the Central Jaguars. This game was an open affair that enabled the Rangers to pass and run their way to a 36-0 victory.
The next week brought the team back down to earth as they had to fight their way to a 6-0 win over the hard hitting Metro Lions. This win put us at the top of the table with the Manuakau City Islanders who we were to play next.
This was a game that the Juniors wanted to win to stay on top and erase the nil all draw from their minds. As it happened, things went our way during the game and the Rangers recorded a 13-0 victory.
The team then had a two week lay off before playing their last regular season game against the Metro Lions taking the game out 6-0. Even though we lost we still went straight through to the Junior final that saw us not play a game for 6 weeks due to the Christmas break.
In the final we faced the Manukau Islanders who had improved with each game. The final was a rugged game that saw the scores tied at 6 a piece at the final whistle This meant extra time in which the team that scored first would win the game. This honour went to the Manukau Islanders with the final score being 13-6. The season was an excellent one in which the Rangers Juniors played out of their skins and made the club, and themselves proud. |
