	The poem that relates best to the novel the Catcher in the Rye would be the poem is �This is my letter to the World.� By: Emily Dickenson. The poem�s text is: This is my letter to the world, That never wrote to me,-- The simple news that Nature told, With tender majesty. Her message is committed To hands I cannot see; For love of her, sweet countrymen, Judge tenderly of me! One of the central themes for this poem is separation and alienation. This poem, like Holden, shows love for solitude yet loneliness because of it. Although most poets do not use themselves as inspiration for poems or use themselves as the focus of their poems, �This Is My Letter to the World� is strikingly descriptive of Dickinson�s literary career. This is because in the poem Dickinson writes to the �world� and when she states �that never wrote to me,--�many can determine that her audience was the world � and that it cannot write back to her. But one could also believe she was addressing nature, human kind on a whole, or even the reading public. In any of these cases Dickenson shows that because she was �hermit like� she wanted to be alone, but did not want to be judged wrongly because of it. Dickenson wanted to be accepted by society but did not want to be a part of society that accepted her; this is the same way Holden feels. Holden wants to have friends, but does not want to interact with them, and when he feels he is done interacting with them he simply upsets them so that they will leave him in seclusion. This is relevant to J.D. Salinger�s The Catcher in the Rye because of the obvious alienation that Dickenson puts herself through in the poem and in real life this is what Holden craves but cannot seem to obtain. The difference between the two is that Holden always seems to have people around him or someone to talk to, while Dickenson is a recluse person who lives on her own and does not seek human contact. Moving forward, the message that seems to be coming through the poems short text is that the poem is a letter filled with simple news that is to be passed down through hands that she will not see, meaning her poem; her art is to be taken care of by strangers. One can establish that this poem is filled with figurative language. In fact, almost none of the lines have a literal meaning. All of the words are cleverly put together immaculately to seem to have a literal meaning but in reality, they all have a veiled meaning. Such an example would be the word: �world� (as explained above) has many possible meanings, �hands� and �countrymen� can also be seen as multiple meaning words. This is an excellent attribute of the poem because the book also has many figurative meanings to words. Furthermore, this poem is a sound fit for the book: The Catcher in the Rye due to its hidden meaning, obscure symbols, and the theme of alienation.
