| Proposal # 1 State of Ohio GI Bill | ||||||||
| *All of Ohios US Military Veterans which includes: Active Duty, Ohio National Guard, and Reserve; would be eligible for a smaller scale State of Ohio version of the Federal GI Bill for Educational Benefits in the State of Ohio. *This would only be for the individual Veteran themselves who wants to go to college and not for his family or kids. *Model the Ohio GI Bill Program after a combination of Minnesota and New Yorks legislation that helps Veterans. A brief summary of both states legislation is: Minnesota: Veterans attending public or private colleges in the state who served in the armed forces on or after 9/11, and who have exhausted other federal and state benefits, can be reimbursed $1,000 per semester up to $10,000 under a law that just took affect in 2007. New York: Currently veterans are eligible for awards of $1,000 per semester for full-time study or $500 per semester for part-time study. *An Ohio GI Bill would be awarded to Ohio US Military Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces on or after September 11,2001 and have exhausted all other federal and state benefits or the semester of college they are enrolled in and can receive between $500-$1,000 per semester. *To be eligible to receive this Ohio GI Bill. Model the program criteria similar to the criteria of the State of Texass for the Hazelwood Exemption Act. The criteria would be the educational benefit would be strictly for honorably discharged or separated Ohio Veterans. Ohio Veterans would apply via a need based application process.
