Help Ohio Vets Movement Bill Proposal for Creating New Legislation to Help Ohio U.S. Military Veterans with College Educational Assistance and; Filling the Financial Gaps of  the Federal G.I. Bill
Note: We urge Governor Ted Strickland and the State of Ohio General Assembly to at least pick one of our  three proposals and pass it into a law which helps not only Ohios Active Duty Veterans but all of Ohio?s current Veterans as a result of Operation Enduring Freedom(OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom(OIF).
Proposal #3 State of Ohio Armed Forces Loan Forgiveness Program
All of Ohios US Military Veterans which includes: Active Duty, Ohio National Guard, and Reserve; would be eligible for State of Ohio Loan Forgiveness program on a need base and first-come; first-serve basis.
This would only be for the individual Veteran themselves who wants to go to college and not for his family or kids.
Model the program after Pennsylvanias legislation that helps Veterans. A brief summary of the states legislation is: Pennsylvania: A state agency extended eligibility period for Armed Forces Loan Forgiveness Program to end this year. The program forgives loans of up to $2,500 for veterans who have not defaulted and who were on active duty between 9/11 and Dec 31, 2007.
An Ohio Armed Forces Loan Forgiveness Program would be awarded to Ohio US Military Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001 and are in financial need of assistance. Loans can be forgiven up to $2,500. An additional amount can be forgiven if the Veteran seeks employment in a job that is in dire need in the state of Ohio for example: Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, and etc. can get $2,500 + an additional $2,000 for filling employment gaps in Ohio.
To be eligible to receive this Scholarship. Model the program criteria similar to the criteria of the State of Texass for the Hazelwood Exemption Act. The criteria would be the educational benefit would be strictly for honorably discharged or separated Ohio Veterans. Ohio Veterans would apply via a need based application process. The program applies to all US Military Veterans: Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve. Those who can apply must meet the following criteria: Are a citizen of U.S. at the time of entry; Were Ohio residents at the time they entered the U.S. Armed Forces; Have served at least 181 days of active duty as indicated as net service on their DD214; Have received an honorable discharge or separation or general discharge under honorable conditions; Are not in default on Federal education loan or student loan made or guaranteed by the state of Ohio.
