| Note: We urge Governor Ted Strickland and the State of Ohio General Assembly to at least pick one of our three proposals and pass it into a law which helps not only Ohios Active Duty Veterans but all of Ohios current Veterans as a result of Operation Enduring Freedom(OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom(OIF). | |||||||||||||||
| Proposal # 2 State of Ohio Armed Forces Scholarship | |||||||||||||||
| All of Ohios US Military Veterans which includes: Active Duty, Ohio National Guard, and Reserve; would be eligible for State Scholarship to any Ohio public college or university on a need base and first-come; first-serve basis. | |||||||||||||||
| This would only be for the individual Veteran themselves who wants to go to college and not for his family or kids. | |||||||||||||||
| Model the Scholarship after a combination of Kansas and Marylands legislation that helps Veterans. A brief summary of both states legislation is: Kansas: The legislature in 2007 for the first time appropriated $25,000 for scholarships for Kansans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan for at least 90 days after 9/11. The Kansas Board of Regents plans to distribute the funds on a first-come, first served basis. | |||||||||||||||
| An Ohio Armed Forces Scholarship would be awarded to Ohio US Military Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001 and are in financial need of assistance. The award can be $250-$1,250 in scholarship award amount. | |||||||||||||||
| To be eligible to receive this Scholarship. Model the program criteria similar to the criteria of the State of Texass for the Hazelwood Exemption Act. The criteria would be the educational benefit would be strictly for honorably discharged or separated Ohio Veterans. Ohio Veterans would apply via a need based application process. The scholarship applies to all US Military Veterans: Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve. Those who can apply must meet the following criteria: Are a citizen of U.S. at the time of entry; Were Ohio residents at the time they entered the U.S. Armed Forces; Have served at least 181 days of active duty as indicated as net service on their DD214; Have received an honorable discharge or separation or general discharge under honorable conditions; Are not in default on Federal education loan or student loan made or guaranteed by the state of Ohio. Award is only for use at an Ohio public college or university. | |||||||||||||||
