That Night

The devil will find work for idle hands to do,
He told me to steal from you,
He told me to take your soul he told me to take your life,
Oh how I wish I had more strength, that night.

I did what he asked I did what he said,
I completed the task while you lie in bed,
And when I'd woken to my horrible sight,
I went and turned myself in, that night.

At the jailhouse my mother asked me what I'd done,
I shifted in my seat the jailers hand on his gun,
And when I looked into my mother painful eyes,
I couldn't give her a damn answer, that night.

Out by the gallow poles in the morning sun,
I looked into the crowd for a friend to find none,
And the hangman made his knot extra tight,
I knew I would pay for what I'd done, that night.

The floorboards dropped and I fell toward the ground,
I watched everybody gather around,
The people cheered and people laughed at this sight,
Another soul gone because of, that night.
