From Lerner Community Newspapers - News-Star/Booster January 29, 2003 Letters to the Editor: The first step to solve crime problems in our Uptown neighborhood is to recognize that crime is a problem throughout Uptown. But I read in the Jan. 22 News-Star ("Reed: Wilson L station has most crime on North Side") thatthe current alderman of the 46th Ward says we must wait until a study is completed before solving the crime problem at the Wilson Red Line 'L' station. Wait until more people are assaulted? No, I choose not to wait for the current alderman. We must protect lives of people in our community, now! Sandra Reed, 46th Ward Democratic Committeeman and candidate for 46th Ward Alderman, has asked for the problems to be corrected now, before another man is found frozen to death in the dark corners of the CTA parking lot, 4630 N. Broadway. Obvious solutions include more lighting and security around the Wilson 'L' station. According to the current alderman, the security problems will be cleared up when the station is rehabbed. But in the article the current alderman also says that the CTA has decided to re-do a track study and will delay the start of the rehab project. How many studies will the politicians finance to decide that a simple light is needed to brighten the parking lot? What does a "track study" have to do with the need for lights and security now? I choose not to wait for another study financed by politicians while my family's safety is at risk. I will decide on election day, Feb. 25, to help the people of the 46th Ward by voting for a new alderman. I will vote for Sandra Reed. Sincerely (name withheld by webmaster)
