My Great Grandparents George Theis and Maria Breit-Theis had what we believe to be 13 children. As you will notice below, I currently have the names of 16 children. Some of the names came from my grandmother, and other family members, and some of the names came from our research. We have had so much information comming in, that I though it would be easier to read about our family if I re-arranged this page a little. Click on the links below in the table to read about our family members.......

George Theis Sr. - My Great Grandfather, George Theis Sr was born to George Theis and Catharine Nagle 12 May 1853 in Alsace-Lorraine, which is in France, bordering on Germany. Between the years of 1871 and 1918, Germany ruled Alsace-Lorraine. It is believed that his family ran an Ironworks in Germany and my G Grandfather came to the United States so he would not be conscripted into the German Army.

According to his Naturalization Records George arrived in the United States via New Yorks' Castle Garden on 20 November 1886 supposedly along with his eldest son John. I am still searching for his actual arrival records. They both worked as Masons. George was naturalized on 7 March 1892 at the Common Pleas Court in NYC. George died while living with his son John on 13 November 1918 in Guttenberg, New Jersey. He is buried along with several of his children and one of his grandchildren in Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village New York.

Marie Breit-Theis - My Great Grandmother, Maria Breit-Theis was born to John Breit and Mary Becker circa 1859 May in Germany. She married my Great Grandfather George in Germany circa 1877. Maria arrived in the United States via New York's Castle Garden somewhere between 1880 and 1886 as near as I can figure. I have still not been able to locate her actual arrival records, but I am continuing to search for them.

Maria (aka Marie, Mary) died 11 October 1923 while living with her daughter Elizabeth in Boston Mass. She is buried along with her son George Jr and his wife Bertha in Calvary Cemetery, in Flushing Queens NY.

John Theis - John was listed on the 1900 Census as a Bricklayer. He married Mary Feehely who was born in Ireland. They had 5 sons. Edward, Milton, George R., John Jr. and Valentine. The first three boys died tragically, Edward died at the age of 4 of Influenza, Milton died as an infant of 8 months old, and George R. died at the age of 11, after falling from the cliffs above the Hudson River on the New Jersey side. George was a great lover of birds and it is believed by his family that he fell trying to catch one of them. These threee children are buried along with their parents, and two other people, believed to be family members of Mary Feehely- Theis in Calvary Cemetery in Flushing Queens. Johns Theis Sr. died on 24 December 1940, and his wife Mary died on 24 March 1958. John and his family lived in New York City, but later moved to New Jersey. Although John's name is listed on the same 1900 Census as his mother, at 183 W 98th St in NYC, it is also believed that he and his wife lived at 203 W98th Street at that time.
