Helena Rojo was born in Mexico City, on August 18th.
At a very young age, she became interested in the acting career, and
started taking lessons with Carlos Ancira and José Luis Ibáñez, two well
known mexican actors/producers. At the same time, she earned a living working
as a model and acting in small roles.
In 1969, she was named “El Rostro del Heraldo”. El Heraldo de México
is a widely distributed newspaper in Mexico, and each year the Board selects
a young talent with a promissory future to sponsor her in her pursuit of
fame.
Helena was then able to sign an exclusivity contract with the Film
Producing Company “Productora
Cinematográfica Marte”, acting in at least 8 films.
Then, german director Werner Herzog,
selected her for a role in “Aguirre, the wrath of God”, with Klaus Kinsky and
Ruy Guerra. turning her into an international star.
By then, she was recognized and worked with such great directors as Felipe Cazals, Rafael Corkidi, Alberto
Bojórquez, Marcela Fernández Violante, Jorge Fons, Arturo Ripstein.
With Ripstein, she made “Foxtrot” with
Charlotte Rampling, Peter O'Toole and Max von Sydow.
She has been awarded with the Ariel
(mexican Oscar) for best actress in “Fin de Fiesta” (Party ending) and
“Misterio” (Mistery), and the ‘Diosa de Plata for “Los Cachorros” (The
Cherubs). She has also earned public recognition for her works on television,
the latest, the “Premio TVyNovelas” for an outstanding career.
She has worked in many plays, most of
them Comedy, and many Soap Operas, ranging from historical to pure romance.
She has no particular line of work – she can be the meanest or the suffering
one.
