SEWING MACHINE

TWO TYPES OF SEWING MACHINE and ITS PARTS

II. TREADLE SEWING MACHINE
      - is run by foot and is controlled by a rotary wheel. Any adjustment like    the tension or the length or width of the stitch is made by moving a dial

Three Major Parts of a Treadle Sewing Machine

A. CABINET

-holds one or several drawers, an extension leaf and a center drawer. It is  used for storing or keeping important sewing materials, especially those that does not fit your sewing box.

B. UPPER PART

- it is the upper metal part which holds other important mechanisms  of the sewing machine

1. ARM

- used to carry the whole part.
1.1. Spool pin holds the spool of thread.
1.2. Bobbin holds the lower thread. It is found directly below the presser foot.
1.3. Bobbin winder winds thread in the bobbin which is used for lower threading.
1.4  Balance wheel makes the needle and the bobbin of the machine run.
It  is the part you move first when you start sewing to make sure the sewing
                       machine runs properly,
                       on a clockwise direction.
1.5 Stop motion knob- used to release or tighten the movement of the  needle  bar.
It  is located at the center of the balance wheel.
1.6. Belt connects the balance wheel and the drive wheel.
1.7. Stitch regulator controls or determines the size or length of the  stitches.
1.8. Feed regulator lever controls the forward and backward motion ( atras- avante)
                                         of the cloth  being sewn

2. HEAD
2.1 Thread take-up lever moves the thread up and down, thereby creating tension in the thread
2.2 Thread guide guide the upper threading of the sewing machine.
2.3 Presser foot holds the fabric against the feed dog. It is found at the foot  of the presser bar.
2.4 Presser bar holds the presser foot and needle.
2.5 Presser bar lifter lowers and raises the presser foot.
2.6 Feed dog moves the material as it stitches. It is found directly below  the presser foot.
2.7 Feed dog regulator used to adjust the height of the feed dog, ready for sewing
2.8 Upper tension regulates the tightness or looseness of the stitches. It is found in the middle of the face plate.
2.9 Face plate covers the left end head on which the needle bar and thread  take-up lever are located.
2.10 Needle clamp holds the needle in place

3. BED

base of the sewing machine. It rests normally on the wooden frame of the  sewing machine
3.1 Shuttle holds the bobbin and bobbin case in place. It is where the inner threading starts.
3.2 Slide plate covers the part where the bobbin and the bobbin shuttle are.
3.3 Throat plate gives the needle access to the lower thread through the feed dog.
It is found directly under the needle.

C. STAND

1. Treadle where the feet rests while sewing. It puts into motion the drive wheel.
                      2. Drive Wheel drives the balance wheel
                      3. Belt Guide holds and keeps the belt in place.
                      4. Drive Wheel Crank turns the drive wheel.
                      5. Pitman Rod connects the treadle to the brand wheel crank.
                      6. Legs supports the stand.
