WHAT I'M READING NOW: (Not necessarily A-List, but FYI) 8/02 Just discovered M.C Beaton & her charming "Agatha Raisin" mysteries. I like the idea of an amateur female detective in her 50's who smokes, drinks, swears & actually has a sex life. Also reading Ann Rice's newest (Vittorio the Vampire) after swearing off her permanently. Yeah, I like the Italian Renaissance...that's why. But it's still damn talky, philosophically lightweight & borderline homoerotic like all of her books. (Guess it sells... right?) For want of something else--having tapped out almost entire cassette novel section of the Santa Clara Library--I picked up Amanda Quick's Affair. I've heard about this kind of book, and it follows the formula: bristly, independent virginal female detective meets chemist, they fight, they make love, they solve mystery,he saves her, they get married. Ummm, gee. What a surprise. Not bad, but once again: damn talky. I made the mistake of taking the recommendation of an Asian lady at the library who claimed I would "love" Clive Cussler's Atlantis Rising. After listening to this book I hid the cover when bringing it back in. It was such a horrible mess of a book that I was literally ashamed to be seen carrying it. Cardboard-cutout characters, stiff dialogue, goofy plot involving a Nazi rivival. Also reading William Trevor's Death in Summer, a suspense novel in the style of Ruth Rendell about an introverted man who loses his beloved wife in an accident, leaving him with a six-month-old daughter. He gets involved with his mother-in-law, an old lover, and two mentally-unbalanced orphan-home runaways. This is a sad story, but a good story. Wm. Trevor wrote Felecia's Journey, which was made into a movie. |
