Henry Darger (1892-1973), one of America's most important "outsider artists," was unknown & unrecognized during most of his lifetime. Several years ago I saw his work for the first time in an issue of the Smithsonian Magazine. I found Darger's pictures compelling, disturbing & yet strangely beautiful. You will notice that many of his images are influenced by the coloring book, catalogue art & the illustrations in the children's books of the 1920s and '30s. The selections below--all details from larger paintings--are illustrations to his 15,000 page fantasy war epic.
