Biography:
Patrick Stewart was born on July 13, 1940 in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. His childhood was not particularly happy. He began performing in several local theater groups when he was 12. Left school at 15 to work as junior reporter on local paper; quit when Editor told him he was spending too much time at the theatre and not enough working. Spent a year as furniture salesman, saving cash to attend drama school. He received a scholarship that allowed him to attend the Old Vic Theater School in Bristol in 1957, and in 1959 at the age of 19, his extraordinary stage career began with his first professional role.
Stewart began losing his hair at 19. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and is at home on the stage in London, New York and Los Angeles.

In 1964, Patrick met Sheila Falconer, a choreographer with the Bristol Old Vic company. On March 3, 1966 Patrick and Sheila were married. In 1968, Daniel Freedom Stewart was born and Sophie Alexandra Stewart was born in 1974.

Patrick Stewart was discovered by producer Robert Justman for the role of the Captain of the Enterprise. During pre-production for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Justman and his wife visited a dramatic reading at UCLA (University of California: Los Angeles) that Stewart was participating in. He was so impressed by the Englishman's presentation that he remarked to his wife, "I think we've just found our Captain." He later said that he hadn't thought about Stewart before, but when he saw him on stage he was very sure that Stewart was the only one who was right for the part. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry wanted a Frenchman to play the part, so Justman arranged a meeting with Stewart, Roddenberry and Miklis. On October 10, 1986, Justman assigned the role of Data to Stewart. He still believed, however, that Stewart should be the Captain, and that no other actor could convince him or even Roddenberry otherwise. Roddenberry gave in after casting was completed and decided on Stewart after all, even though he did not fit Roddenberry's ideal image of who should play the role. The part was then tailored to Stewart. Today, Stewart says that he had no idea at the time that to many Americans, who sits in the Captains chair on the Enterprise is more important than who occupies the throne of England.

During his seven years on Star Trek, Stewart remained true to the stage. In 1994 he received two "Laurence Olivier Awards" for "A Christmas Carol", and was nominated "best actor" and "best entertainer." He was presented with the "Best Solo Act on Broadway" in 1992, and in 1993 was nominated for a Grammy for his LP-recording of "A Christmas Carol." In 1995 he appeared on the stage in New York City's Central Park in a huge free production of Shakespeare's "The Tempest."

Stewart also played leading roles in several films, such as "Death Train" with Pierce Brosnan, "Gunman" with Christopher Lambert and "Jeffery,". In February 1994 Stewart hosted "Saturday Night Live". According to viewing statistics, that particular episode was rated one of the top five of the season. The largest television magazine in America, "TV-Guide," voted Stewart the "Most Bodacious Man on TV", and he has been on the cover of the 'TV-Guide' 5 times. In 1996 he produced the TV-Movie "The Canterville Ghost" with himself as Simon de Canterville. Stewart has been committed to Amnesty International for years. He is also involved in the protection of animals, and in particular for Whales, at The Whale Conservation Institute.

After 25 years of marriage, Stewart and his wife have divorced. He was later engaged to script writer Meredith Baer. His current relationship, however, is with Star Trek: Voyager producer Wendy Neuss. They met during production of Star Trek: The Next Generation. They are since Sept. 1997 engaged to be married.

Stewart will be paid $12 million in a multifaceted pact that revolves around him reprising his role as Captain Picard in the 9. "Star Trek" film. As part of the pact, Stewart will also be the film's associate co-producer and get a three-year, first-look deal with Paramount.

In Dec. 1996 he became a star on Hollywoods Walk Of Fame and he was honored in April'97 in Washington, D.C. for his pre-``Star Trek'' career as a noted player in Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright presented Stewart the 10th annual ``Will Award'' of the Washington Shakespeare Theater.

Patrick Stewart has boldly gone where many a man has gone before--the altar. Breaking the hearts of female Trekkers worldwide, Captain Picard headed to the final frontier last week with Wendy Neuss, his steady for the past six-plus years. Stewart, 60, and Neuss, 39, swapped vows Friday in Los Angeles, his spokewoman, Kelly Bush, said. Stewart's faithful Trek sidekick Brent Spiner, aka Data, served as best man, and several other Enterprise crewmates were in attendance. The follicly challenged thespian met his bride-to-be on the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation--he, of course, was the captain of the Enterprise; she a production assistant.
