VI. Mindful Spirit

A.  True spirited mind, customary ethical order

[1.  Infinite midpoint]

1.  In its simple truth spirit/mind is consciousness and breaks its moments apart.  2Action divides this mindful spirit into substance and the consciousness of substance, dividing substance just as much as it does consciousness.  3Universal essence and purpose, substance confronts itself in the form of singularized, isolated actual reality.  The infinite midpoint here is self-consciousness, which, in itself unity of itself and substance, now becomes that for itself, universal essence and its singularized reality united, elevating the latter to the former and acting in a customary ethical manner – it also brings universal essence down to its singularized reality and implements the purpose, the merely thought substance.  Self-consciousness generates, produces, the unity of its self and substance as its work and consequently as an actual reality.

2.  In this separation of consciousness simple substance holds onto the opposition against self-consciousness while also deploying it to exhibit the nature of consciousness of distinguishing itself within itself as a world articulated into masses2Substance thus splits itself into a differentiated customary ethical essence: a human law and a divine law.  3Similarly, the self-consciousness confronting it assigns itself, according to its own nature, to one of these powers, while as knowledge, it divides itself into the ignorance of what it does on the one hand and the knowledge thereof on the other, which latter is thus a deceived knowledge.  4This shows that consciousness does in fact experience both the contradiction of those powers into which substance divided itself and their mutual destruction, as well as the contradiction of its knowledge of the customary ethics of its action with what is in and for itself ethical, and ultimately suffers its own downfall.  5In fact, however, through this movement customary ethical substance becomes actual self-consciousness or this self becomes the self existing in and for itself in which, however, the customary ethical order has already been destroyed.
