G.W.Fr. Hegel's System of Science, Volume I, Spirit/Mind.

8 Germinal, 1807, price: 6 Gulden.

This volume describes the emergence and development of knowledge.  Providing a preparation for science from a perspective that makes it a new, interesting, and indeed the first science of philosophy, the book is designed to replace psychological explanations as well as abstract approaches to rationales for knowledge.  Patterns of mind are described as stations on the pathway to becoming pure knowledge, absolute spirit.  The main sections of this science, which themselves comprise numerous subsections, treat of consciousness, self-consciousness, observing and interactive reason along with customary, educated and moral patterns and then religion too; in short, spirit/mind in all its various forms.  The chaos in which the rich variety of spirit/mind's manifestations first appears is here brought into scientific order, that is according to the necessity with which incomplete ones breakdown and transit to higher forms, their nearest truth.  Final truth is found in religion and then in science itself as the result of the whole.

The author has included a preface to state his views on the need for philosophy given its present condition; to denounce the pretentious nonsense of the philosophical formulas currently besmirching it; and to explain what philosophy and its study are really all about.

A second volume will be devoted to the system of logic as speculative philosophy and to a scientific treatment of nature and of spirit/mind in light of the logic.

[Note.  The translation has been slightly adjusted to accommodate the deletion of Phänomenologie.  d.h.]
