Ubi-soft, the people who bring you most excellent F1 racing sims have made a most unusual game-SPEEDBUSTERS - and done an excellent job as they do with their racing"sims"-
Ubi-Soft's SPEEDBUSTERS is the most WILDEST fun I've had in a long time. Just DON'T watch the opening movie-It's the most pointless low budget idiotic poor acting waste of space ever on any recorded medium. That said let us continue...They took a different approach to this game, none of the cars you start with are what you would call modern or muscle or supercars. (unless you download some at UBI-SOFT) They're like old Mercedes and Chevy Belair. But it has attitude and atmosphere!. The cars are available in a wide variety of paints and skins. Pick the black Bel-Ray (Belair) with the skull on the hood paint job and a skeleton is driving the car-cool!. One of the downloadable cars is called the Thunder, it's a 76 T-Bird with the guys arm hanging out the window and his husky's head from the back seat. Another is called the Montana and it's a lil Jeep thing. With the patch theres 7 cars in arcade, 6 in championship, and 10 in multiplayer. 4 tracks can be earned in championship mode (Nevada, colorado, Canada, and New York) and then can be raced in arcade mode adding to the three you begin with, California, Mexico, Louisiana - and are filled with hazards such as lava pits, swinging pendulums, and giant rolling rocks!. Even a giant T-Rex! Avoid these, get it pointed straight and hit the nitro! Woo-eee!! Flames shoot out the exhaust and your flyin! Just let off before the next turn. They're part on road and part off road, thru towns and tunnels, over bridges and jumps. In Louisiana theres a ramp next to a bridge that if you hit just right and fast enough you land on a ships deck in the harbor and jump from there back to the road. In California you start out racing down a beach road turn and go thru a movie studio back lot where you go over a bridge and JAWS comes up out of the water to get you, then a giant King-Kong is out of control and slamming his fist on the road where you go thru. Next is the giant mechanized T-Rex that crosses the road and will eat your car. Then thru the Hollywood hills past the big Hollywood sign on some freeways and back around to the beach,quite a ride! In Mexico you will face lava pits, swinging pendulums, a old mexican bus losing its luggage and a giant rolling rock in a mountain tunnel. In Louisiana theres a jump over a train and a harbor, and a giant alligator when your coming around a bend. You can race in daytime, dusk, rain, or snow, and mirror the tracks. Force feedback is awesome I could feel my car breaking loose on sand and gravel, and feel the bumps and hits from other cars, it's just right i didn't have to adjust anything. Set-up was a breeze-I choose my wheel and force feedback and assigned my nitro button. The car physics are dead on, the car body rolls in turns and powerslides. The sound is great, all together it really puts you in the game. I even found myself laughing at my misfortunes. The cars glass shatters, bumpers bend, hubcaps fly off, I even lost my hood. So lets just say damage modeling is par for this game-excellent. Or you can turn it off. In Championship mode you choose from 5 (6 if ya get the patch) cars and start with 36000 "credits"- you will need to buy a car and repair it after a race and refill the nitro bottle. You can earn money for upgrades like tires and spoilers and engines, and even a better car. Do well here and open up the other tracks. Multiplayer gives you all the cars and tracks. UBI-SOFT has set up a real nice game room with chat and profiles and you can join or create a room. I found a couple people playing. Ok to summarize - NOT A RACING SIMULATION. I think a giant mechanized T-Rex tells ya that. A LOT OF FUN, possibly the most fun driving game I've ever played. Certainly all things look great and work right here. Force-Feedback and sound, - great. Crazy tracks that'll keep ya comng back and trying. A deal at 30 bucks a virtual steal at the discount or used game rack for any less. Highest recommendation from DA HEET for arcade driving fans and the kids, and the kid inside us all. - HEET
