Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter are enemies in much the same way Severus Snape and James Potter were. Coming from a totally pure-blood family, Malfoy despises any witch or wizard that is a half blood or muggle born. Malfoy is in Slytherin house, which is probably why Snape favours him so much over the other students - giving him house points, commending him on ordinary work and not giving him the unfair detentions so many other students get.
But Malfoy's family is not as clean and noble as Malfoy would like to make out. During the Dark Years, Malfoy's father was one of the Lord Voldemorts most trusted and valued followers. He was right in on the Dark Lord's inner circle, planning destruction and death with other dark, powerful wizards. When the Dark Lord's reign ceased, Malfoy's family was one of the many Dark followers that claimed Lord Voldemort had hynotised them into doing his evil bidding, and no punishment was served. But most other wizards think that the Lord's former followers are lying, and are scared that when and if he rises again, his followers will be just as numerous and powerful as they were in the Dark Years.
