May 25th, 2007!!!

This site is dedicated to the movement to create a new holiday; a worldwide holiday when you’re not allowed to have any reservations about anything whatsoever. A day when nobody cares if you fuck in their bathroom; a day when you have an excuse to do just about anything without being judged, and wake up the next morning with the world exactly the way you left it. Hedonism day is a day of unrestrained happiness.
You can do anything you like, so long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. You can rub jello on your bum just to see what it feels like, without having to explain yourself or worry about social graces. Sure you could do this any day you like, but on Hedonism day you get to celebrate this shamelessness with hundreds (if we’re lucky, thousands) of people around the world. On Hedonism Day, a sort of a social contract exists between those observing the holiday, where you don’t give a shit what they do and they don’t give a shit what you do (so long as it’s not terribly immoral, of course.)
Best to prepare early on for Hedonism Day. The day prior, prepare your favorite foods, buy your favorite alcohol and drugs, and prepare in any other ways so that the hedonism can begin the moment you wake up. Modesty Be Damned!!!

About

In ancient Greece, hedonism was a part of life; even the stuffiest old philosophy professors were jumping in on orgies. Unfortunately, the pursuit of happiness in Western society has been hindered by placing value on self-sacrifice and suffering; the belief that it is more noble to be passive and suffer than it is to be happy. It has been argued that such values came about in part by Christianity’s aversion to the world-view of Epicurus, who believed that mankind largely decides it’s own fate and that the Gods cannot be counted on to make things right. Epicurus had many thoughts on hedonism, and sought Ataraxia as the one supreme good.
Ataraxia is a state where desires have all been satisfied, it is a balance between overindulgence and underindulgence. It is pleasurable to drink alcohol, for example, but drink too much and you will get tired and unhappy. Eating is pleasurable, but if you completely gorge yourself it will be unpleasant. Ataraxia is the state that Epicurean Hedonism seeks as ideal.
Ataraxia is not really what Hedonism Day is all about. We seek some amount of over-stimulation, not balance on Hedonism Day. While it would certainly be unwise to overindulge to the state of unhappiness, the conflict between desire and satisfaction is what creates pleasure, and therefore freedom from desire or complete satisfaction is not the point of Hedonism Day. When we talk about hedonism, we mean exactly what most modern westerners think when they think of hedonism: shameless, unrestrained pleasure.
Aristippus’ philosophies on hedonism are closer tour own. Aristippus believed that immediate pleasure is the one supreme good. The Cyrenaics, followers of Aristippus’ philosophy of pleasure, believed that only immediate experience can be known for certain without epistemic doubt, that all living things seek pleasure and avoid pain, and that thinking about the past or future caused anxiety and should be avoided.
H edonism as most see it is in fact something of a synthesis between the philosophies of Epicurus and Aristippus. Most of us believe that some concern for the future is necessary so that pleasure can last and pain can be avoided, but that satisfaction is less pleasurable than stimulation.
