Whenever you decide to purchase a puppy, remember, there are certain qualities that you should look for in a breeder. A good breeder can be identified by their puppy placement practices, the condition of their dogs, their willingness to answer questions and their willingness to allow in-home visits. Reputable breeders will interview potential puppy buyers to determine acceptable owners and encourage people who are not yet ready to care for a pup to wait until they are truly prepared. Responsible breeders often require AKC limited registration and suggest early neutering to prevent unwanted litters and to control careless breeding. Limited registered dogs cannot compete in AKC conformation classes or have any of their offspring registered, however, they can participate in all AKC performance events. It is also important to match the breed of dog with the potential buyer. Prospective buyers, together with a breeder, need to assess how the size, energy level and other breed specific characteristics meet the future owner's expectations. A puppy's welfare should be the highest concern on everyone's list, not only at the time of purchase, but throughout the life of the dog. Owning a dog requires a significant commitment. That is why a sales contract generally includes a clause that permits the breeder to take the dog back if the buyer can no longer keep or care for it properly. This is a hallmark of a reputable breeder and is solely for the protection of the dog. In addition, all Labradors 2 years of age or older that are in a breeding program should have a radiographic test for hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia performed, with an OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) rating assigned to them proving they have been screened. Also, Labradors should be screened annually for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) by an ACVO accredited veterinarian and/or genetically screened for PRA by OptiGen.
