Hook - Work!
Complete an activity or two for some RAIDERBUCKS!!
Hook Work 1 - 50 RaiderBucks
Use the internet to research a career you would like to persue. Make a tri-fold brochure (see Miss Crutch for an example) advertising the career for other students who may be interested.
Include in the brochure:
Education requirements, possible salary, location of jobs, type of work (what would do in that career?), and pictures of people working at that career. Also include a bibliography of all the sites you visit.
Hook Work 2 - 50 RaiderBucks
Using Yahoo, Google, or a similar search engine, look up three colleges that you might be interested in attending and find out the following statistics:
1. How many people go to school there?
2. What is the out-of-state tuition?
3. What types of services does the school offer?

After finding these statistics (and writing or printing the page address where you got them), write three paragraphs about which school you would most like to attend, why you would like to go there and when you would need to apply.
Hook Work 3 - 30 RaiderBucks
Find an opinion or editorial column on the Washington Post or New York Times website that you strongly agree or disagree with. Print out the article and write a three paragraph essay on why you agree with the author. You must back-up your argument with factual evidence!
Hook Work 4 - 150 RaiderBucks!!!
This hook work requires a lot of research! Please make sure to include ALL elements! You will be assembling a travel packet.
Decide on a country/city/place you would like to visit over Spring Break or the Summer.Your destination must be further than an eight hour drive from Opelousas.
First - Research at least two different airlines and the cost to fly, round-trip to your destination from Lafayette or New Orleans. You can put in your dates, times you would like to fly and destination and choose itineraries without buying! Options include Continental, US Air, Southwest (domestic only), Iceland Air, and British Airways to name a few. Include both itineraries (flight numbers, dates and times) in your packet.
Second - Find two possible hotels to stay in at your destination and the rates for the same time period as your flights. Try Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. or go directly to a hotel website (such as marriott.com) and see if they have a hotel in your destination city. "Check Availability" will get you a no-obligation rate-quote just like the airlines. Print out the rate quotes and information pages for both of your chosen hotels.
Third -
Find two places/items of interest in your destination city and how much it will cost to tour/visit them. (for 10 bonus raiderbucks, figure out how you will get from your hotel to the place-of-interest and how much it will cost; i.e. taxi, plane, bus, shuttle, etc) Print out the description of the destination, or write a one-paragraph description, including visitation hours (when it is open) and explain cost. Most major tourist destinations have websites for their cities with all of these items explained for you.
Finally - Calculate the entire cost of your trip, including meals (average $10 - $15 for dinner, $5 for lunches/fastfood), transportation, hotel, and tours, using the least expensive air and hotel you found. If you do not yet have a passport and would need one for your trip, include $75 for a new passport and photo. Also calculate how long it would take you to save for your trip based on your current allowance or wages, minus your regular expenses. (you wouldn't save all of your allowance, obviously you'd need to subtract for food, movies, etc). SHOW ALL WORK!

Your final packet will be 10 - 15 pages long, typed!, and can be stapled or bound in a folder/binder. Please include pictures of the place you will visit.
