Cyprus is a republic, and the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Located west of Syria and South of Turkey.
The island has a maximum length of about 220 km (about 140 mi) from northeast to the west. Its maximum width is about 90 km (about 60 mi). Nicosia is the capital and largest city.
Since 1974 the nothern third of Cyprus has been occupied by Turkish troops and has formed a separate-though officially unrecognized- state called the Turkish Republic of Nothern Cyprus. |

Greek and Turkish are both official languages, though Greek is the primary language in the Greek Cypriot zone and Turkish is the predominant in the Turkish sector. English is Widely spoken in main towns. Cypriot Greek, although related to the language of the Greek mainland, is a dialect closer to the ancient Greek than any modern Greek dialect. |

The Greek sector of the island is the one I am most familiar with, for I have spent 12 or more summers thoughout the years at. I have spent most of my time in a city called Paphos. Besides that city, my family and I visited Larnaka (where the main airport was at), Limmasol and Nicosia, which were the big cities. |

I cannot talk enough of the great times I spent in Cyprus. Paphos was my favourite. I could always know it has that charm that always makes my feel at home away from home. I remember going to Kato-Paphos (means down Paphos) where one can drive along and see the shore, young fishermen, and young lovers on one side of the road; and see cafe's, bars, small stores and peolpe of all ages walking and talking, on the other side of the road. Drive a little further and you will run into a small dock, and a seafood restaurant 10 steps away.
I don't know about you .. but that sounds like a winner of a place to me. |

One thing I will never forget is visiting Aphrodite's bath. Legend has it that she used to bathe in that small pool nearby a natural grotto, which is shaded by a fig tree. A trail from the baths takes you to Fontana Amorosa (8 km from Baths, at the end of Akamas Peninsula). Walking along this trail, one can enjoy the the view.
When I fisrt went there, the tourists were allowed to get into it, and experience the magical feeling of sharing her bath. By now, there is no access to the water, it is merely a pass-by view. |

Petra tou Romiou Birthplace of Aphrodite, 25 km from Paphos. According to legend, Aphrodite mythological goddess of love and beauty, rose from the waves in this strikingly beautiful spot.
The Baths of Aphrodite at Polis and the "Fontana Amorosa" - Fountain of Love - also echo her apparent penchant for the island. |

Troodos Mountains are one of the two mountain ranges on Cyprus. Although most of Cyprus enjoys a pleasant climate all year, portions of the mountains recieve winter snows and more than 100 cm (40 in) of rain annually. (from Encarta Encyclopedia) I remember spending winters there playing with the snow, and going to one of those amazing restaurants and coffee shops in the area. Another place I will never forget. |
