A few weeks went by and Matt and Paige were completely prepared for their little bundles of joy that were due within the next two weeks. They were on alert; Paige could go into labor at any moment. They had to make a few changes around the house; the nursery had to be fitted for two occupants and the baby proofing of the rest of the house had just been completed. Paige’s bags were packed and in the corner of the closet ready for the trip to the hospital; Jeff was even off work for the blessed event. Paige’s parents, who had moved to Florida a year ago, were back in town to help and insisted on staying until Paige and the babies were settled in at home. Paige’s brothers, Paul and Chris with their wives Cheryl and Lucy, and her sister Maytia (pronounced Ma – Tee – Ah) with her husband David, were all on hand too. The waiting room at the hospital was certainly going to be full, 3 grandparents, 4 uncles and 3 aunts. These kids were definitely not going to be short on love. By the way, they are both girls.
Matt and Paige had decided on the final names one night when the whole family
was over for dinner, all 12 of them (Matt and Paige included), 14 including
the babies. After they had eaten the family had settled in the living room to
talk, the topic, baby names.
Paige’s Mom – “So have you decided on any names from my first
grandchildren?”
Paige looked at Matt and smiled. She nodded.
P-“The first one, we decided on when we still thought we were only having
one, you all know, Ruby Elizabeth and our second little surprise, Kasey Faith.”
Matt looked at his Dad and smiled when he saw the look of complete happiness
on his face.
M-“So do you all approve?” Paige’s mom Elizabeth was crying.
She ran to her daughter and hugged her. You see Faith was Paige’s sister’s
name, she died when Paige was 10.
Paige’s Mom – “Thank you” she whispered into her daughters
ear then leaned over to Matt and said the same while hugging him.
Lucy-“They’re beautiful names, 2 beautiful names for what I’m
sure will be 2 very beautiful babies” Paige smiled at her sister in-law
and placed her head on Matt’s shoulder. Matt put his arm around his wife
and rubbed his hand up and down the length of her arm. He looked down at her,
she was all-aglow, but looked very tired.
M-“Tired babe?” Paige only mumbled in agreement. He kissed her forehead.
Paige’s brothers and their wives stood up, along with her sister and her
husband.
Paul-“We should go, you have to get some sleep” He said in his best
big brother tone. She smiled up at him under heavy eyelids. Her family waved
good bye and left. All that was left were her parents, Matt’s dad and
Jeff. Paige’s mom and dad followed after her brothers and sisters. Before
Matt’s dad left he leant down and whispered something in his ear.
Gill-“You have made me very proud.” Matt smiled at his dad; he then
turned and left after kissing Paige on the cheek. However as he turned he saw
Jeff still sitting on one of the big chairs in the living room just staring
at Matt and Paige. He turned to Jeff and gave him a look (let’s go), Jeff
mouthed ‘I’ll be right there’ and Gill left.
Jeff stood up and walked over to Matt and Paige. Matt stood and the two helped,
what was now, a very large Paige off the couch. She laughed in spite of herself,
she couldn’t believe she actually needed help to get off the couch. Jeff
hugged Matt and whispered in his ear so Paige couldn’t hear.
J-“You did good!” He smiled at Matt
M-“I know” Paige heard that and decided to let it slide, some brotherly
thing probably. Jeff turned to Paige, cupped her face in his hands, looked her
in the eyes and smiled. Then he placed a feather light kiss on her forehead.
P-“I love you too… My brother” Paige knew what Jeff wanted
to say. Suddenly Paige jumped and they all looked at her scared.
M-“What was that?” Paige looked up from her stomach to the boys
and smiled.
P-“The girls kicked.” She said proudly. Jeff and Matt’s faces
lit up.
J-“Cool! ( he paused ) Can I?” He looked at her stomach.
P-“Of course.” Jeff put his hand to Paige’s stomach and felt
a little kick. He looked up at her and smiled big. He couldn’t believe
he was actually feeling this. He was so excited.
J-“this is so cool, hang on, does it hurt?” Jeff asked a little
worried.
P-“No, not really, just a little strange” Jeff was visibly relieved
to her this. He dropped to his knees in front of Paige and put both of his hands
on her stomach. He leaned in real close and said.
J-“Hey in there my little nieces, I can’t wait to meet you, so feel
free to come out anytime now. But there is one rule while your still in there,
don’t you go hurting your wonderful mom, ok?” Jeff stood up and
kissed Paige on the cheek.
J-“I’ll talk to you later” Paige and Matt nodded and Jeff
turned to leave the room.
M-“Wait I’ll walk you out” Matt ran after his brother. They
stood at the door, Matt turned to Jeff.
M-“Thanks man”
J-“For what?” Jeff was confused.
M-“Everything, helping us, being there when I should have, everything”
J-“It’s no problem, you know I’d do anything for her”
Matt nodded.
M-“If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you were in love
with her” Matt smiled.
J-“I am” Matt’s smile dropped off his face and Jeff couldn’t
help but laugh.
M-“You better explain real quick” Jeff laughed even more at that.
J-“I love her like I love you” Matt smiled. He knew now what Jeff
meant.
M-“Your sister, that’s what back there was all about” Jeff
nodded.
J-“I’ll talk to you tomorrow, you get back to your wife, she needs
you” Matt smiled at his brother. Jeff walked down the path and into his
car. As soon as Matt saw him pull out of the driveway and pull onto the road
he closed the door and went upstairs.
When he got upstairs and into their bedroom he found Paige getting into bed.
He walked over to the dresser and got changed. He slipped in beside her and
wrapped his arms around her.
M-“You know I love you right?” Paige yawned.
P-“I know, night baby” Matt kissed her forehead.
M-“Night” They fell asleep in each other’s arms and at about
5:00am Paige woke with a start. She jerked up in bed, which in turn woke Matt;
he looked around confused.
M-“What? What’s up?” Paige flinched.
P-“Its time” She said breathlessly.
