The Incredibles (2004)
Reviewed November 11, 2004

I wasn't going to go see the Incredibles. I like Pixar movies but I'm not a major hardcore fan so I figured I would catch it on DVD down the road. I then heard a rumor that the Star Wars III preview was going to be on it and it was enough to tip me over the edge and go check this movie out.

The bad news: The trailer wasn't on this screening

The good news: The Incredibles was absolutely amazing!

This film is by far the edgiest, funniest and all around best thing Pixar has put out to date. The humor was more adult oriented than anything they've done and actually, so was the plot. Everything was just really cool. I don't know how else to describe it.

The reason I was less than ecstatic to see this movie is because I didn't see the point in using computer animation to make a movie about people. It just didn't compute. (Get it?) And sure they're super heroes with abilities that would have to be computer generated in live action but it would be just as cool. But what I didn't expect is for the movie to be so stylized. The Pixar folks took total advantage of the medium and used a perfect match of bending reality to their style, case and point being the choice of designing characters to look "cartoony" as opposed to realistic. It just worked, much like the stylized feel of The Ladykillers. Both of these films are less than realistic but you accept it cause every element of the movie is consistent with realism vs. style.

The bottom line is that this movie would've been great as a live action or 2D animated movie. Why? Because the story was great. And let that be a lesson to everybody who thinks 3D is better than traditional animation. It's all about the story. Good story is good story. End of story. Disney would still have an animation department if they understood this concept. Hopefully when Eisner's gone...

The only element that may have lacked was the plot. And I'm not saying by any means that it was a bad plot. The plot was great. It's just that this movie is being stacked up against Finding Nemo and it beats Nemo on evey account except plot. Finding Nemo just had an amazing plot. The Incredibles had a great plot but the final "showdown" was slightly anticlimactic. But not really. Just when compared to Finding Nemo. It's not a slag. Just comparing.

The movie ended up with a PG rating, which is tame in general but the first time Pixar's dabbled higher than a G rating. I think this was a great choice. Sure, there is a moment or two that a small child could find to be scary but show me a cartoon on the telly that doesn't. You gotta do what's best for the story.

At the end of the day, Pixar did it again. And this isn't from some diehard Pixar fan. Just a guy that we all know has better taste in movies than anyone in the world. Definite must see. Also, the short film "Boundin'" was really fun too.
