| Elizabeth Ann was the first daughter of John Smurthwaite and Eliza Hardy. She married Joseph Cowens in 1873 under the name of Ann Smurthwaite. She was Elizabeth Ann on her birth registration and is Elizabeth A in the censuses. I think she was probably known as Ann, which lends credence to the thoughts that her father (John) was the son of Ann Smurthwaite (see the page on John Smurthwaite). Elizabeth Ann's sister Maria married a Henry Cowens who was from Cumberland, as Joseph was.
