Day 1

Pre-instructional:

TTW ask the students what they know about crabs (KWL Chart)
TSW have a crab race.
Directions:
TSW practice walking like a crab (hands and feet on floor backwards. Head face up.)
TSW form two teams. TSW race to the finish line. Then another team member will go. The team that finishes first wins.

TSW sing �Crabs are Crabby.�

Watch out for his pinchers (pinch thumb and pointer finger in pinching motion)

Procedure 1:
a. TSW will predict what A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle is about.
b. TTW read the story to the class.
c. TSW answer questions about the story.

Procedure 2:
a. TTW show the students a picture of a crab.
b. TTW tell the students facts about crab.
c. TSW tell what they have learned.

Procedure 3:
a. TTW discuss with the students what it means to outgrow something.
b. TSW brainstorm a list of things that they have outgrown.
c. TTW write a list on the board.

Procedure 4:
a. TSW pretend that they have outgrown their house and move to a new one.
b. TTW give each student a pattern of a house.
c. TSW decorate their new house.

Procedure 5:

a. TTW give each student a pattern of a crab, and pattern blocks.
b. TSW place the pattern blocks inside the crab until it is filled completely.

Day 2
Pre-instructional:

TSW have a crab race.

Procedure 1:

a. TTW reread the story A House for Hermit Crab.
b. TSW answer questions about the story.

Procedure 2:

a. TTW show the students a picture of a crab.
b. TSW tell the facts that they have learned about crabs.

Procedure 3:
a. TTW discuss with the students how the book goes through the twelve months of the year.
b. TSW say the months in order.
c. TSW tell how each month Hermit decorated his house.
d. TTW make a chart on bulletin board paper.
e. TTW write what the students say under the correct month.

January
February                      Hermit Crab moved to a bigger shell.
March
April
May                              He added pretty coral to his shell.
June
July
August
September
October
November
December                      Hermit moved out of his shell.

Procedure 4:
a. TSW make a crab.
b. TTW cut regular size paper plate in half.
c. TSW paint it red.
d. TTW give student�s legs to glue to their grab.
e. TSW wad black tissue into little balls and glue them on the crab for eyes.
