On Phantom Fictions and Reincarnations I do so love big words!!! As I surf the internet in search of Phantom fiction to devour, or as I curl up with my newest Phantom novel, I know I must be expecting something. After all, I form such strong opinions about what I've read; there must be some reason for my falling madly in love with one piece of writing while dismissing another as complete drivel. So what is it that makes a decent Phantom reincarnation? Well naturally, the basics apply. Good writing quality, proper grammar and spelling and punctuation, and readability. You'd think these would go without saying... unfortunately, for web fiction, it doesn't always. After all, anyone can have their own web site. Secondly, a believeable plot. I personally am really turned off by tales of Erik finding "someone new." I know, I know - it's unlikely that Christine would ever come back to him, since he sent her off with Raoul. But (in my humble opinion) it's even more unlikely that he would fall for another woman. Thirdly, a lack of nymphomania. Why is it that so many hormonally overdeveloped teenagers write drivelous Phantom fictions and post them on the internet? Fourth, a preservation of the original characters and at least some of the general background of the Phantom legend, if not exact plot events. Maybe this is why I personally prefer adaptations of Leroux's novel, to those that center on the ALW musical. Some people sort of blend the novel with the musical, which is ok... but only if it isn't confusing. After all, there ARE things in the musical that never happened in the novel. Fifth, accessibility! I hate how there's so very little fanfic around! I'm always searching for new things to read, and anxiously anticipating updates to the "works-in-progress" I've read and enjoyed. Pleasepleaseplease, if you know if any good fanfic sites or books or ANYTHING, drop me an email!!! Posted by: Heather (h_sullivan@bigfoot.com) 11:40 PM 5/16/98
