SpyKids - Off to a Good Start
When Clayton Webb walked into the classroom of the International Spy Academy he wasnt quite sure what to expect.  Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw, however.  The director had said they were students, but he hadnt said they were children.

Children were what Webb saw when he entered the room.  Eleven children to be more precise, all of them sitting quietly and looking at their teacher expectantly.  This is Clayton Webb, she introduced him.  Hes with the Central Intelligence Agency and will be overseeing your missions.

Webb took a deep breath as every eye turned to face him.  Okay, he started.  You know my name, but I dont know yours yet.  Why dont we start with that?  Clay sat on the edge of the desk and explained, Starting with you, he pointed at a girl in the front row.  Go around and tell me your name and something about you.

Im Judy Dunne, the girl started softly, her wide hazel eyes locked on the older man.  Im twelve years old and Im really good with computers and stuff.

Hi, Judy, Clay said softly, causing the girl to giggle.

After a pause the next student said, My name is Samuel Jackson.  I want to become a doctor when I get out of school and Im already certified in first aid.

Sounds like a good way to start, Sam, Clay replied.

Im Abraham Johnson, said the boy behind Sam softly.  Claritys my twin sister.  Were thirteen years old.

We usually call him Abby, Clarity added.  I go by Clare most of the time.

Clay raised an eyebrow, but didnt say anything.  The two kids might be twins, but they couldnt look more different.  Abby had brown eyes and blond hair, while Clare had light brown hair and light hazel eyes.  She had a light, delicate frame and her brother was more solidly build.  But as different as they looked on the outside, Clay could tell that they were flip sides of the same coin.  Abby was shy and introspective, while his sister was outgoing and extroverted.

The next student smiled charmingly and said, Im Benjamin Kreig, but I go by Ben.  Im twelve and if you need something, Im your man!

Webb smirked and said, Twelve years old and already conning people.

Ben blushed and the boy behind him said, My name is Ezra Laramie, sir.  I am thirteen years old and have been told that I should be an actor.  Giving Webb a dimpled grin, he added, But I would rather be an undercover agent.

Webb returned the smile; then glanced at the student behind Ezra.

My name is Obediah Sanchez, he said softly.  I do my best to keep Ezra and Ben out of trouble and that is a full time job.

I can see that, Webb commented, as the rest of the students giggled.  Glancing at the next student, he said, You are?

Kevin Seaborn, sir, the boy answered, staring at Webb with wide blue eyes.  Im really good at talking.

Talking? Webb repeated, scowling.

Yes, sir, Kevin said, grinning.  I can talk people into things or out of things or convince to do something or not.

Okay, Webb said, smiled.  Two more and well be all done.  He glanced over Seaborns head and smiled at the small girl seated there.  Her curly, dark blond hair was pulled back in a loose braid and she gazed disarmingly up at him with her dark blue-gray eyes.

Shysie Tanner, she said softly.  Its a Native American name.  Means silent little one.  My ma was a Native American, my daddy is a CIA agent.

Nice to meet you, Shysie, Clay said sincerely.  The girl smiled and looked down at her hands, which were folded on the desk in front of her.

Im Logan Wilmington, the last student said.  Im fourteen and if you need to know anything, you just ask me and Ill tell ya all ya need ta know.

Ill remember that, Mr. Wilmington, Clay replied.  Glancing at the young people in front of him, he said, The director sent me to get to know you and decide if I thought this idea would work.  I can honestly tell you, when I came in the room I was ready to stay just long enough to justify my time and tell him that it was a foolish idea.  It may be that, but I think we can give it a try.

Really? Chris asked excitedly.

Clay nodded.  Well start out small and try to figure out how best to group you.  I think the best option would be to put you into two groups, but keep them flexible in case something happens and we are short a member one of the teams.

*****

Over the next couple of weeks, Webb worked with they young people until he knew their strengths and weaknesses.  He could tell almost immediately that Chris and Ezra made the perfect team leaders.  They were firm with the other students, yet caring and patient with them.  He also knew that he didnt want to put Sam on the same team as either Ezra or Ben.  He had a habit of losing patience with them.

As well as Judy and Logan worked together, Logan tended to shelter the girl rather than letting her learn what her limits were on her own.  Chris reacted the same way to Shysie.  As a result, he decided it would work best to put Logan and Shysie on the same team and Chris and Judy together.  Since he had quickly realized that Chris and Logan were good friends, he knew that each young man could trust the other to watch over the girl and he could trust them not to smother her with protection.

Conversely, he knew he couldnt separate the twins without driving them to distraction with worry over the other one, so he determined to put them together.  That just left him with Obie and Kevin.  After much deliberation, Webb decided that it might be best to put Obie on a different team from Ben and Ezra, so that the two could learn to behave without his constant guidance.

At the end of two weeks, he gathered the students together and announced the breakdown of the teams.  I thought long and hard about my decision and here is what you have.  There are two teams: CABLES and JOCKS.  Ezra will lead CABLES, with Clare, Abby, Ben, Logan and Shy.  Chris will lead JOCKS, with Judy, Obie, Kevin and Sam.

Is this final? Chris asked softly.

Webb shrugged.  No, he answered.  As the situation dictates the teams may combine or change to best suit the mission youre called to perform, but these will be the people youll most often work with.

Okay, Ezra said softly.  When do we start?

Clay smiled slightly.  Well, the director has a mission in mind that is going to involve both teams.
