When do we start? Ezra asked, cautiously.  He never dreamed hed get picked a team leader.

Clay smiled slightly.  Well, the director has a mission in mind that is going to involve both teams.

Chris glanced at Ezra; then turned back to Webb.  Whats the mission, sir?

Clay sighed.  Its going to have a level five threat reading.  That means you stay out of reach of the targets and you dont tail them too long, so they dont become suspicious.

Were going to be tailing someone? Kevin asked softly.

Clay nodded.  Our target has a ten year old son and will be visiting a museum with the boy.  You all will watch him intermittently, taking turns so that he doesnt become suspicious.  When he makes his drop, one of you will get it and replace it with something we want passed to his contacts instead.

Youre not going to grab him? Sam asked incredulously.

Clay smiled.  Hes more useful to us if his contacts think that hes still a reliable source.

That makes sense, Obie said thoughtfully.

Clay nodded and said, Ill be watching you and monitoring communications from the van.  If anything goes wrong, I want you to begin gathering there as quickly as you can without attracting undue attention.  Okay?  Clay smiled as eleven young people nodded at him.  Good, he said.  Ill leave you to sort out how youre going to work, be ready to go in half an hour.  With that, Webb got up and left the room.

Okay, Chris said.  When we combine like this, whos in charge?

Ezra smiled and said, I bow to your greater wisdom, Chris.

Me? Chris squeaked.  At a nod from Laramie, he said, Okay then.  I think itd be best if we paired off for this one.  Ezra nodded his agreement and Chris went on.  The twins together, Obie and Sam, Ben and Logan, Judy and Kevin and Ezra, Shysie and myself.

Sounds good to me, Ezra agreed.

*****

I like it, Shysie said softly.

Chris nodded.  Me too, he replied.  It looks like a window into the past.

Ezra nodded silently.  The painting they were studying showed a desert landscape with small prairie town in the foreground and a coyote sitting on a hill in the background, howling at the moon.  What do you suppose the artist was trying to say? he queried.

Lonely, Shysie answered softly.

Maybe, Chris said.  In a soft voice, he whispered, Our friend is here.

The three continued to wander around the room, looking at the pieces in the exhibit, all the while watching their target in case he made the drop.  Just as he was leaving the room, the man sat his attach case beside the door and walked out.

Shysie glanced at the two boys; then scampered over to the bag.  Opening it, she withdrew the thick packet and handed it to Ezra.  Ezra slid the envelope into his backpack and handed her the file they were supposed to replace it with.

The girl slipped the envelope into the case and stood up.  As the three students were moving away from the area, a large man came into the room.  He grabbed the bag and turned to go, but his movement had attracted Shysies attention.

The man scowled and said, What are you doing here?

Lookin at the paintins, Shysie answered, pointing at the wall.

The man grabbed her arm and asked, Did you see who left this here?

Shysie gasped and struggled.  Finally, she said, I magine you left it, yer the one what wants it.

Let her go, Chris demanded.

The man growled and shoved the girl away.  As Shysie fell into one of the pedestals and knocked over a vase, the man ran out of the room.  Ezra ran over to the girl and called, Chris!

Hes getting away, Chris replied.

I know, Ezra answered.  But its not our job to catch him.  Shys hurt!

Chris looked torn for a moment; then rushed over to his friends side.  Shy? he said softly.  The girl had a nasty cut on her arm from hitting the pedestal and another on her head from the vase.

Ezra set the vase back on the pedestal, thankful that at least it was not harmed; then turned to Chris.  I dont think we should move her, he said softly.

Chris nodded in agreement and said, into the microphone he was wearing, We switched the packet, but Shys hurt.

Ill be right there, was Webbs immediate reply.

Soon ten of the children had been gathered at the surveillance van, while Shysie was taken to the hospital to get checked out.  Webb turned to look at the group and sighed.  They really were so young.

He walked over and said, Okay, I know Ezra and Chris want to go to the hospital and make sure shes alright.  Anyone else?  Every child in the group nodded and Clay nodded too.  Hed expected as much.

Clayton arrived at the hospital with the children a short time later.  He sent them into the waiting room and promised to find out how Shysie was and if they could go see her.  As he exited the waiting room, Clay heard someone call him.  Turning, he saw Vin Tanner and Chris Larabee coming his way.

Chris, he started.

Before he could say another word, Chris had lifted him off his feet and threw him against the wall.  What kind of game are you playin with these kids, Webb.

Clay squeaked and said, Larabee!  Put me down.  Were both getting too old for this.

Ill put you down, Chris replied.  After you tell me what happened.

Clay sighed and turned to Vin, not finding any sympathy there, he said, We knew a person weve been watching was going to make a drop.  We also knew from experience that he wouldnt do so in front of adults.  We took the chance that he might make the drop in front of children which he did.  Webb paused for a moment, then continued more softly.  Shysie made the switch, but the contact arrived shortly there after and attacked her.  I delayed him for as long as I could without raising his suspicion.  Webb turned to Vin and added, Im sorry she was injured, but it was a completely unexpected development.

Put im down, Vin said softly, touching Chriss arm.

Chris complied and Webb straightened his jacket.  I know youre upset, Chris and its understandable.  Shes your god-daughter for heavens sake, but beating me up wont change anything.  It isnt as though I wanted her to get hurt.

Chris sighed.  Im sorry, Webb.  Im just worried.

How is she? Vin asked.

Clay shrugged.  I was just going to ask the doctor that when Chris accosted me, he explained.

The three men caught up with Shysies doctor and asked how she was.  Well, shes got some bruising and a couple laserations, but those arent too serious.  She also has a mild concussion, so wed like to keep her overnight.

Vin nodded and asked, Can we go see her?

Certainly, the doctor replied.  Shes resting at the moment, but you can go as long as youre quiet.

Vin nodded again and him and Chris headed down toward where his daughter was sleeping.  Clay thanks the doctor and went down to the waiting room.  After updating them on her condition, he suggested that the kids call their parents and get a ride back home.

Can we go see her? Ezra asked softly.

Clay smiled.  Sure, he replied.  Just try not to wake her.

Yes, sir, Chris said, leading the way toward where his friend was sleeping.

Ezra peered timidly into Shysies room and saw her father sitting beside her, as well as another man.  He glanced at Chris, who shrugged and motioned that they should wait.

Just then, Shysie woke up and smiled.  Hi, Daddy, she said softly.

Hi, Pumpkin, Vin replied.  Gave me quite a scare when I heard you got hurt.

Im sorry, she whispered.  Stiffling a yawn, she asked, Wheres Ezra and Chris?  Are they okay?

Ezra? Vin asked.

Chris?! his friend repeated.

Were fine, Shy, Ezra said from the doorway.  Are you alright?

Yeah, she replied.  Head hurts a little.  They catch that guy?

Chris shook his head.  Mr. Webb said that they needed him to get the information back to his people or theyd know we knew they were tryin to get information, he explained.

Vin blinked and said, Youre Chris and Ezra?

Christopher Stanton and Ezra Laramie, Ezra said softly.  Youre Shysies father?

Vin nodded and said, This is her god-father, Chris Larabee.

Shy yawned and said, Im tired, Daddy.

Vin sighed and kissed her on the forehead.  Go to sleep, honey.  Ill come get you in the morning.

It was nice meeting you two, Larabee said.  I think Ill feel better about this whole thing knowing that Shysiell have you watching her back.

Mr. Webb, too, Ezra replied.

Chris sighed and glanced at Vin, who chuckled and said, Yeah, Webb too.  Turning to Chris, he said, Lets get these kids home, Cowboy.

They call you that too, huh? young Chris said softly.

Ezra giggled softly and Vin began chuckling.  Yall are Cowboys, the older man said softly.

Shut up, Tanner, Chris growled.
