English 410: E-Portfolio

Overview

Welcome! The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase the major documents I have composed for Dr. Henry's English 410: Technical Writing class at George Mason University . I carefully revised each document by applying my editing checklist and Reading as a Technical Writer .

The first six weeks of this course stressed the basic tenets of technical writing. To facilitate our learning, we completed weekly grammar exercises, studied chapters from our textbook, Technical Communication, participated in peer revision workshops, and analyzed and critiqued technical documents according to the criteria of effective document design and use of rhetoric (which includes the elements of logos, pathos, and ethos).

The last eight weeks of the semester were devoted to applying our technical writing skills to a collaborative service learning project. I worked with my fellow team members, Kristen Keating and Houman Fathiseysan , to revise Fairfax Choral Society's website and to create a template for their first e-newsletter.

Rhetorical Analysis of a Technical Document: A brief analysis of the document "How Tiny Organisms Helped Clean Prince William Sound." I analyzed the writer's intended audience and purpose and discussed the document's design.

Reading Performance Memo : A memo addressing my performance Reading as a Technical Writer , in which I qualify my strengths and weaknesses in editing a peer's set of procedures.

Term Project Proposal and Task Schedule : A memo to Dr. Henry proposing to revise Fairfax Choral Society's website and to produce an e-newsletter for the organization. A task schedule of deliverables is included.

Term Project Progress Report : A memo to inform Dr. Henry of our team's progress and to address deviances from our proposed task schedule.

Term Project : My team's proposed revisions to Fairfax Choral Society's website. We used our knowledge of document design and our editing checklists to guide our revisions. We have sent our final revisions to Fairfax Choral Society's Webmaster and our changes will soon be implemented to the website. View the website before we made revisions.

Term Project Group Evaluation Memo: A memo to Dr. Henry evaluating our performance, based on individual and team contributions to the term project.

Reflections on English 410 and Creating this Portfolio: A brief document discussing the effects of this course on my writing and editing skills and the process of creating this website.
