Does Our Spelling System Need A C-h-a-n-g-e ?
I think that our spelling system definitely has some problems. However, I do not think that the spelling system should be changed.  While some critics think that our system has too many rules and then too many exceptions, it is our system.  This is what we have become accustomed to.  We are comfortable with our system no matter how complex it may be.

I realize that people think that it we modify our system it will be easier for non-English speakers to learn the language.  I understand that but, what do we do about the English speakers who already know the language and it’s spelling rules.  How would teachers teach, and who would teach?  Would we have a new alphabet?  We would have to if we wanted to move towards a phonetically based spelling system. This would take years.  And would it be worth it?  I don’t think so.  In Literature, you would have to translate almost everything.  This includes things like the King James Bible, and Shakespeare. Our libraries and media centers would be useless.  Someone would have to go and pull all those books and translate them, not to mention the textbooks that would have to be rewritten for students. Also, does this mean that my name would no longer be spelled H-e-a-t-h-e-r? I don’t know, but I’m not sure it would be worth changing our spelling system. And last, I wonder who would do it, and how would they regulate it?
