Grammar Guide
In working on my Grammar Guide, “Clauses”,
I learned exactly what clauses were and what makes up a clause. To
be honest I had heard the term Clause before, but did not really have an
understanding of it. I learned about different kinds of clauses such
as independent and dependent. And also I discovered the many types
of clauses such as relative, restrictive, and non-restrictive. This
will be extremely helpful to me in the future, being that I am going to
be a middle grades language arts teacher. In doing some educational
research for another class, I found that clauses are one of the main concepts
set forth for middle school students by the North Carolina Standard Course
of Study. I feel confident about this subject and feel that I could
accurately teach this concept to middle school students. I do wish
to add that I also learned a lot about technology and building a web page.
Editing Project
Completing the editing project part of
my portfolio was much more challenging than I expected. I found that trying
to concentrate completely on grammar rather than style was very difficult.
I found in my editing project that there were two places where I needed
to change subject-verb agreement because the author incorrectly used “was”:
where she should have used “were”. Also there was some inconsistency
in titles. For example she used “Glass Menagerie” in one place and “The
Glass Menagerie” in another. Adding to that I found a handful of
comma splices throughout the page. Grammatically, there were not
many errors; I found that most of the corrections that I wanted to make
were elements of style not grammar.
