More of My Interests: Kola Boof
I first encountered Kola Boof's work when I was enrolled in World Lit class about three semesters ago.  I found her to be extremely interesting in lots of ways.

I was certainly taken by her insistence to pose bare-breasted for her book jacket photos (see example below).  She wanted to disregard the male hegemony concerning women and their bodies!
Besides her courage, I was impressed by her writing.  She had completed one book of short stories and published some poetry, and she was getting promoting her break-through work,  Long Train to the Redeeming Sin. During this time I also discovered her compelling story, "Day of Vow."

I need to warn you that the story I have for you is disturbing in many ways:
--There is the sexual violence the heroine endures.
--Boof is framing the story within the still racially charged climate of South Africa.
--The climax is the heroine's severing her rapist's penis and throwing it onto the streets of Cape Town.
--Her redemption comes at the Cape Town docks where she is carried off by a "buff" Jesus who looks more Latino/Hispanic than Middle Eastern!

With this warning in place, I would encourage, if you are not easily disturbed, to read the story I have here,
"Day of Vow."
Home!
I like art--as I guess you can tell!  Please enjoy with me!
