Ridiculous Religion
"Wait Kay, there's more! Charity finally remembers what happened when she was sucked into Hell!"
As soap operas, Days of our Lives and Passions are comprised of unrealistic, highly dramatic, and even bizarre plots. These theatrics are part of daily life in Salem and Harmony. However, sometimes writers cross the line between farfetched and nonsensical, as seen in several past storylines of both shows. Passions, having initially centered on supernatural themes, seems to have many more outrageous plots than does Days of our Lives. Those stories involving religion in some way may be considered by many evangelical Christians to be irreverant (or extremely humourous), while milder jests may be tolerated.
Passions
The Bennett Household Gets Sucked Into Hell

In 2001, Kay Bennett (previously played by Tayler Anne Mountz, left) teamed up with an evil witch, Hecuba to rid herself of her cousin, Charity, a girl with ultimate powers of good. Charity is pulled into the fires of hell, but saved by her true love, Miguel. Kay's dealings with the Dark Forces, however, causes the Bennett household to ultimately be sucked into Hell.
Charity: Am I right, Kay? Do you have no soul?

Kay(above): This is ridiculous

Miguel: We don't think so. All right, you haven't been to mass with us in months, and the web site said that soulless people can't go into a church.
          Passions Goes to The Vatican

In 2006, Whitney Russell discovered that she'd been in love with and had a child for her half-brother. To escape her problems, she decides to become a nun. During her time at the convent, she meets someone who claimed to be "God." "God" begins telling Whitney she must do penance for her sin of incestual acts and she commences to cut and whip herself. Eventually, "God"(actually the scheming Alistair Crane) leads Whitney on a quest that is to cleanse her from sin, however turned out to be a plan for evil. At one point during this plot, Whitney finds a code that will allow them entry to the Pope's private quarters. The code is "AGAPE." "God" asks Whitney what this could mean. Although it seems a bit suspicious that "God" does not know agape is a Greek word used by early Christians to refer to God's love, Whitney ignores the fact and continues on her spiritual quest.

This journey brings Whitney and several other Harmony citizens to the Vatican City, where much religious ridicule takes place. Many people have suggested that several aspects of this story were taken from author Dan Brown's
The DiVinci Code.
Monk(to Whitney): If you resist temptation, you will be given God's grace. And remember, if you find that chalice in the Pope's private quarters, your sins will be forgiven.

Whitney: You know, I tried. I tried with the virtual reality headgear. I just- I just don't think I'm going to be able to find it.
Chad: No, you're not all right. You're still sick. You need something for the pain.

Whitney: I'm supposed to feel the pain. It's my penance.
Days of our Lives
            Marlena's Possession

This famous storyline, beginning in April 1994 and ending in July 2005, involved Dr. Marlena Evans becoming possessed by the Devil. Stefano DiMera, wanting to force Marlena to love him, turns to Satanism. He attempts to brainwash Marlena into loving him, however things go horribly wrong (as they always do in Salem) and instead accidentally offers his true love up to Satan. Now possessed, Marlena torments the town of Salem and almost kills Stefano and her lover, John Black. After a long reign of terror, John, who turns out to be a priest, is able to exorcise the Devil from Marlena's body.

This storyline was very controversial as one might think, as this was the first
Days storyline that introduced such a bizarre, unrealistic element. Although this plot idea was hated by some, most of these religious viewers, many viewers watched in morbid fascination allowing Days of our Lives ratings to remain high.
"He's coming! Don't let him take me, my soul!"
Father Francis (to Marlena): I'm not talking to you, Marlena. I'm talking to him (the Devil). Stop hiding behind her...I'm talking to you!
               Virtual Garden of Eden

In the summer of 1999, Greta Von Amburg travelled to France for her coronation and brought along her close pal, Austin Reed. Before Greta can be crowned, however she must endure a series of tests and challenges that prove her virtue. She and Austin are sent to the Garden of Eden via virtual reality headgear, and endure serpents, monsters, and other such obstacles. Austin and Greta are given only leaves to cover themselves meant, of course, to resemble Adam and Eve as they lived in the real Garden of Eden. After passing tests of lust, bravey, and compassion, Greta and Austin are returned to the castle where Greta is to be coronated.
Greta's coronation is interrupted by  assassination attempts, one directed at Greta, the others at Victor Kiriakis, Sami Brady, and Brandon Walker.
