When I was leaving my house one morning, I found a birthday card in the mailbox.  It was from one of my former students.  I wanted to read her card right away, but I was on my way to the station to catch a train to London, and I didn't have enough time.  So I put it in my coat pocket to read on the train.

The train was crowded with people on their way to work, but I found a seat by the window.  The train started, and soon it was running through the lovely fields and woods of Sussex.  The people around me weren't interested in the countryside.  They were all seriously reading their morning newspapers ---- politics and the economic situation.

The people around me lowered their newspapers and looked at me.  I shut the card quickly to stop the music.  My face turned red, and for the rest of the journey I kept looking out the window.

I decided to wait until I got to London to read the card.  But in London there were people everywhere ---- in the bookstores, in the restaurants, in the streets.  I had to wait until 10 o'clock that night.  When I finally got home, I read my birthday card.

==Text==

I like musical greeting cards.  Unlike ordinary cards, it's difficult for me to throw them away.  But, my neighbor, a farmer, has found a good use for them.

Many moles live in the gardens around here.  They dig tunnels, and leave little brown hills of earth.  Those hills spoil the beauty of a lawn.  This farmer has discovered that moles hate music!  He said, "If a musical card is playing in their tunnel, they'll soon go somewhere else."

I bought another card at a shop to try it because I couldn't put my student's pretty birthday card down a mole hole.  It worked!  Now my garden has no more little molehills.
