Himalayans are perhaps the most calm and docile breed of rabbit. Because of their relatively small size and gentle temperaments, they are easy to handle and make an ideal rabbit for children. They are one of the oldest established breeds, originating in the Himalayan Mountains.
Himalayans are very unique because they are the only breed with a cylindrical type body, posed in such a way that they appear as long, narrow, and cylindrical as possible. There are four recognized varieties: Black, Blue, Chocolate, and Lilac. (Black is the original variety.) The ideal weight for Himalayans is 3 1/2 lbs. The body should be covered with short pure white fur, with colored markings on the nose, ears, front and hind feet, and tail. The markings should be rich in color and distinct. The eyes should be bright, alert, and pink in color. The ears should be carried erect. The body should not be short, close-coupled, or arched.
Himalayans are light and temperature sensitive, meaning their fur and markings can change with change in weather or light. It is normal during winter months for Himalayans to develop large, dark eye circles and smut, which go away during molt. Excessive light and heat can cause the markings to fade in color. It is ideal to house Himalayans in dark, cool areas to maintain correct color and markings.
When Himlayans are babies, their fur is almost completely white, except for smut (grayish ticking on the fur). As they age, their markings will gradually darken and the smut will lighten to white. Himalayans are generally excellent mothers.
