~Window Boxes~

 

I LOVE window boxes!! They are one of my most favourite type of containers. I would have them all over the house if I could! Who says window boxes have to be plain. old, wood, or just one colour? Put some decorative paint effects to work on your window boxes; adapt ideas for marbling, stenciling, sponging, or stamping.

 

When choosing plants for your window boxes, first consider the colour of the box itself and try to match flowers up with it. For example, in a pastel coloured container, such as a pale green, pick up the colour in plants of a similar shade. For a more dramatic effect, use contrasting colours. However, it is best to team plants with similar coloured containers. It is not a real good idea to put primary coloured plants in a pastel coloured container.

 

For an instant spring window box, use cultivated primrose that is just coming into bloom. Don't take the plants out of their containers, place them in the window box in these and then part fill the box with a light weight peat based mixture. If you would like a two tier display, add a row of daffodils or narcissus in the back. These will flower for 6 to 8 weeks. They can then be removed and replaced with other seasonal flowers.

 

Window boxes look great during the holiday season with evergreen and winter berries in them. You may even add some mini lights if you like.
