Parenting is one of the most difficult and most rewarding jobs I have had. We all have had those days when the kids just won't settle down or when we can't seem to come up with ideas for entertaining. One of the best things we can do for our kids is to encourage them. It does involve lots of work but the rewards are worth it.

Special Things It is important to a child that they feel special! Whether they are the first child, last child or any in between we can do little things that tell them just how much we love them! Here are some ideas: ~ Send a special note in your child's lunch box in a code you and your child devise ahead of time! For example: 123 could mean "I love you!" ~ Start a notebook that your child can write in and tell you what he/she is thinking! This can be a journal that you and your child share.. especially good for teenagers! Be sure to check it regularly and add your own thoughts regularly too! ~ Set aside time every week to do something special with your child. This can be a trip out for hot cocoa, time spent playing a board game, or even making cookies together. Be creative but do it together! ~ Take time to talk with your child about life! Ask about his/her day, share your day, share hopes and dreams, share about what you enjoyed at their age! They are often surprised that Mom really was a kid before!! ~ Plan a summer picnic at the local park. Pack all the picnic foods and take along a frisbee, ball and glove or any other items that encourage play with your child!

Chores! How do you encourage your child to do their daily chores? Here are some ideas to help.. ~ Write out a daily chore list for your child. For younger children, try finding pictures of their chores in magazines. For example, a picture of a toybox could mean to pick up their toys. ~ Make it a game. Say something like, "Let's see who can pick up the most toys in the next 5 minutes!" Little children love this game! ~ Allow children to help with grown up chores too! Young children love to dust the coffee table and older children can vacuum or mop a floor! ~ While I am not an advocate for allowances, sometimes they can be used with success. Try giving special jobs a special value so children can learn the value of earning money! ~ Be a role model! Children learn what they see. Remember we are to "train up" our children. Training involves modeling!
