[a] Me b. 15 July 1929, Spartanburg, SC, m. Louise Massey 2 Sep 1952 There is some confusion about the earliest generations in my line. To reach the conclusion I state here, I have relied heavily on John Bennett Boddie, "Crocker of Isle of Wight." From his book HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES. Originally published in 1958 in Redwood City, CA. and Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1970. That portion is pasted to the end of this document. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CROCKER of Isle of WIGHT It is stated by Mrs. Myrtle Parker Handley of Birmingham, Ala. that that the name "Crocker" is Scottish. A Crocker or Croker was a maker of crocks, originally large barrel shaped jars. The name Crocker is similarr to meaning to that of Potter. It is an ancient family in England. See Westcotes Devonshire by G. Oliver and P. Jones 550. Also the Harleian Society Vols. GI 78; IX 57. The arms were "Argent a chevron engrailed between three ravens, sable". (Burke) Anthony Crocker was the ancestor of this family in Isle of Wight. His first appearance of his name in the records of that county seems to have been on June 4, 1688. when he, together with John Sherrer and John Britt. appraised the estate of Thomas Doles. (W. B. "A" ' 282) He made his verbal, death bed will, in May 1693 for John Newman, and two other subscribers testified in court Aug. 9, 1693 that they were at the house of Anthony Crocker in his last illness and that he gave two head of cattle to each of his four children, ROBERT, WILLIAM. MARY and EDWARD CROCKER , that he had of his wife then living. To Son, EDWARD, he gave the bed he layed on. Wife MARY CROCKER. We think he was born around 1822, but we're not sure. He became a farmer in Nova Scotia and with his wife Mary Jane McBride fathered 11 children. In the late 1880s his eldest sons, seeking work, moved to the Boston area. Over the next few years, they moved their mother and younger siblings from Nova Scotia. Hezekiah visited briefly but soon thereafter returned to Nova Scotia, where he died in 1891. One son died in his teens when his horse rolled over onto him, and he was taken back to Nova Scotia for burial. The rest of the children lived on in Massachusetts, and are buried there. None of the Crocker sons had children, so the name in this branch has died out. We think Hezekiah may have come from the UK but so far we have not been able to discover anything further about his lineage. I hope this is of interest. It seems from all that I have read that a tie would have to be in the old country. I know nothing about the first Anthony Crocker back of the late 1600s; so I believe he was an immigrant. Does anyone have a line traced back to England, Ireland or Scottland?
