Salvin's Cichlid, Tricolor Cichlid

Cichlasoma Salvini

This is an excellent addition to just about any cichlid tank. Their beautiful colors will leave just about anyone in awe. Their colors are especially heightened during breeding. These fish can be very territorial, and should only be kept with fish of the same size and aggression. These fish are capable of defending there territory against fish even double their size. Breeding of these fish should be done in a tank by themselves, because they usually proceed to kill any other fish in the tank with them. These fish prefer to lay there eggs on vertical or near vertical surfaces, which is similar to an angel fish. Sexing of these fish is somewhat difficult, but the male will have pointed dorsal and anal fins, with a striking red patch near their anal fins. The females will be less brightly colored, but may develop a red patch on their belly. This cichlid doesn't do much digging, so plants may be placed in the tank with them. Right now I have three of these fish, and I'm hoping that a pair will develop as they get to be bigger.
