Jack Dempsey

Cichlasoma Octofasciatum, Cichlasoma Hedricki, Cichlasoma Biocellatum

These fish are definetly some of the most beautiful Central American Cichlids (S. Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras). The male of this species will generally be larger and have anal and dorsal fins that are more pointed, the male will also be more brightly colored. This fish is an open spawner. They require a large tank because their average adult length is 8". Another reason for this requirement is, if you want to breed these fish NO OTHER FISH WILL BE TOLERATED IN THE TANK WITH THEM, but do not let this discourage you, they usually are quite calm. If you would like to try to breed these fish a tank of at least 80 gallons is reccomended. The pH of the tank should be about 7.4 and the temperature at a constant 80F. Regular water changes should be done, and the water should be kept very clean. If this fish is in a tank that's too small it will start to get a bent over, stunted growth shape. Plants should not be present in a Jack Dempsey tank, but rockwork is o.k., as long as it's secure and will not collapse, as these fish are very big diggers. If you are not breeding these fish the temperature can be from 72-80F, and the pH between 6.8-7.8.
