Picture this. You’re young, popular and beautiful, and people just cannot get enough of you. This is an
everyday thing for both John Prats and Heart Evangelista, they’re smack right in the middle of this action.
You can spot them weekly on their ABS-CBN afternoon teen show BERKS, every Saturday at 5 PM.
Close-Up Planet got up close and personal with them and found out some really good stuff!
HEART EVANGELISTA
She’s 17. She’s sugar and spice and everything nice. And she’s having the time of her life. Born Love
Marie Payawal Ongpauco on February 14, 1985 and the youngest in a brood of six. How does she keep up
with everything?
What do you want people to know about you?
I’m really down to earth and makulit. I can be really simple and casual at times.
What do you do in your spare time?
Well, most of the time I go out with my friends and we go to the mall.
Are you into sports?
I’m really into rock climbing now, and I also enjoy playing badminton a lot.
What book are you reading right now?
I’ve read Memoirs of A Geisha. And I find it really good. [After reading it,] I realized that there are people out
there who lead lives that are so much different from mine.
What’s on your CD player right now? What type of music are you into?
Right now, I’m into Sarah Brightman, Dave Matthews Band, The Calling…I like a lot of stuff.
Your choices are pretty diverse.
Yeah, I like to be open to a lot of things.
You’re 17 now, almost a grown up. At what point did you feel like you were no longer a kid?
Actually, I still feel like a kid sometimes, but now, there are these times, like me and my mom, when it
comes to decisions, parang nagka-clash, unlike before, she’d tell me this and I would agree, but now I
have my own opinions, but it’s ok.
Who were your crushes when you were a kid?
I liked Leonardo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet and Luke Perry as Dylan in Beverly Hills 90210.
How do you know when you really like someone?
I’ll know if I like someone when my heart skips a beat.
Is it skipping right now?
It stopped already. (giggles)
At what age do you think you’re going to marry?
Sometimes, I get overwhelmed, because everything’s happening all at once and falling perfectly
into place, like just last week, we were along the [highway] and I saw the billboards for [this ad
I’m in], and it was just so weird to see them everywhere.
You’re really lucky to have a really great job.
It’s something that I really treasure, you know? Like when I’m out, even though I’m really tired I still say hi
to the people I see, kasi parang, I realized, why should I ignore them? They’re the one’s who put me where
I am right now.
Are you enjoying yourself so far?
Right now? Yeah, I’m really having fun.
JOHN PRATS
At 18, He’s at the height of his career and on top of everything. Born John Paolo Quiambao Prats or John
the older brother of Camille, he started acting since he was 8. Already a pro at his chosen field, this
handsome specimen of the male persuasion has big things planned ahead of him. But what exactly goes
on in his mind?
Who is your biggest international celebrity crush?
Definitely Natalie Portman. She has this mysterious thing about her, like you think she’s innocent but she’s
really naughty. I really like that in a girl.
We know you look up to your Kuya Aga, but how do you deal with the pressure of everyone saying
you’re the next ‘Aga’?
Of course, nakaka-flatter when they tell me that, pero okay lang. I try to keep things on a wholesome level,
even if I’m pressured to protect my image. And I’ve also sort of patterned myself after him, it’s a bit of a
challenge actually.
What are the pitfalls of starting showbiz at 8?
During my first taping, medyo nahihiya pa ako. But I guess everything went ok. My schedule then was Ang
TV every Saturday, so there really wasn’t much of a hassle.
How is it being the eldest of your brothers and sisters?
It’s actually hard being kuya. I have to set a good example to my siblings. I also have to have a good deal
of patience. I remember I used to always fight with Camille, pero ok lang. It’s all good now.
Since you’re known for your killer smile, have you ever consciously used it to attract someone’s
attention?
Well, not really, but I guess my smile is one of my best assets.
So, you mentioned before that you like Natalie Portman, what was it in Heart that reminded
you of Natalie?
If you look closer, she has the same mole on the upper cheek.
What kind of music do you listen to when you’re sad to make you feel better?
Alternative. I like Dave Matthews Band and Incubus because ang galing ng drummers nila! Also John Mayer,
he has the same voice as Dave Matthews’. I really like his song, “Your Body Is A Wonderland”, galing ng i
ntro, catchy!
How much like you is your character in BERKS?
Like Javie, I want to be like Jerry Maguire, pero mas maluwag, that’s why I’m in Thames International
Business School.
How do you know if you really like someone?
I’m more silent, I guess. Sometimes I just stare, maybe I text, call or visit her. I’m actually torpe.
What’s the silliest thing you’ve done to attract someone’s attention?
For my first girlfriend, she was a bit older than me, I was 16 or 17 and she was 22. I had to exert a lot of
effort to keep up with her level. We got into a fight one time so to make amends, there was this one time
at Friday’s, I bought her cake and the waiters and I serenaded her with the song “The Way You Look Tonight.”
What are the little things that Heart does that you just love?
Heart is really sweet and thoughtful, like if she was going to order at McDo, she would ask for everyone
else’s order!
As the new crop of hot stars in Philippine show business, how does popularity affect your life?
Masarap maging artista, but you lose privacy! Isang mali, bad ka na! You really have to be careful, it’s like,
sometimes I think, ‘I’m not God here.’ I make mistakes too. You also have to set an example for the youth
to touch their lives..
