"Getting There" SOW 5/7/96

Once again we have a very long interview from Grayson...but I noticed most of the interviews were really long back ten years ago.  I notice most entertainment magaazines nowadays have those short blurbs and 5 min. interviews (the only exception being
Vanity Fair).    He was so spiritual back then and got really all philosophical.  Guess I'll just get into stuff not revealed in other articles.

One thing the author mentions is that G's name sounds like a 19th century lawyer rather than a 20something actor of Jewish heritage.  Gee never thought of it til now...yup his name does scream "Jane Austen's male protagonist."

He tells of the story of how his mom taught Hebrew school (she's from Israel) and he got into mischief when she took him there, "stealing folk's yarmulkes and having a miserable time."   As another note, G's dad, Donald was of Scottish/Irish background and raised a Quaker.  I can't conjure up any ideas on how his folks met considering their completely different backgrounds!  Aside: I believe they've been together over 35 years?! They went to G's E5 premiere last year.

He talks about the pilot for NBC he did called "Sibs" which was created by the producers from Cheers.  Oddly this is the only comedy I've heard G has done.  He also had expected to do it six years with steady paychecks and mapped out where he would live in L.A.  Alas as folks know, this didn't happen and he moved back to New York.

Another World had a new producer, Jill Phelps back then (does she have fans???? I hate her with the heat of a thousand suns!) and Grayson was happier than usual about getting a storyline.  He was playing "Jean Claude McCouch" protecting an abused wife (Courtney).  Sadly as we all know, G's contract was not renewed as the story sputtered to an end---though AW was going to be cancelled anyway in 1999.

He talks about spirituality, yoga, how he feels about himself, and this lasts a whole column in the article!

One fascinating part was how he ends up talking about Betty Buckley but manages never to say her name!  They broke up that year, and G got very introspective.  He said "her notoriety and level of stardom made it very difficult."  I was wondering back then if the tabloids really did a hard number and called him her boy toy with the 20 yrs age difference.  I wonder what the climate is today, because the dude who plays Sayid is about 18 yrs younger than his girlfriend, actress Beverly D'Angelo and it looks like nobody cares.

G says he doesn't regret their relationship and seemed wistful about it.  Contrast this to a 2003 even more personal interview that he said she was too high maintenance and couldn't get along with his mum!

When I first opened the article, I was in awe of G's hot pic of him in a black tank shirt...though dayum he looked so young!  Back then, cute young boyish biscuit; now, hot, sexy,  bangable biscuit.  There are more pics and I'm gonna scan them soon.  My fave pic is the adorable one of him with a palomino horse--just about the only pic I've seen of him wearing a cowboy hat outside of
Legacy!
