The youth at Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be staging an evangelization concert on November 8 at the Chinese Cultural Centre. When this idea first came up late last year and early this year, I questioned on our church’s ability and availability of resources to host such an event. So far, I am thoroughly impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication the organizing team has demonstrated.  Under the guidance of Rev.  Fr. Joseph So from Hong Kong, it looks like the planning and preparation is well underway for a successful execution.

At this stage, we need to stand back and ask ourselves the purpose of evangelization and what will be our expectations.

In the Scriptures, Jesus gave to His disciples The Great Commission: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit… Evangelization comes from Jesus and that Great Commission and is given to all disciples today as it was two thousands years ago. Every Catholic by virtue of their Baptism has the responsibility and privilege of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all nations and peoples. Evangelization, therefore, is the essential mission of the Church. In the words of Pope Paul VI, the Church exists to evangelize.

This evangelization concert is not about entertainment or performances. It should not be taken as an opportunity to show off our musical talent. It is about spreading the good news of Jesus to those who have never been exposed to the Gospel. It is also intended for those who have been baptized but choose not to practice the Catholic faith. Through the evening of sharing and witnesses, we hope to awaken in them a renewed and deeper love for our faith. And for those who participate, it is an opportunity to bear witness to the faith with more than just words. If we can bring back just one lost sheep back into His fold, I think we have done our job.

Let us all pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us through this final stage of preparation leading to a successful evangelization concert in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
