Chapter Eight: Learning to Compromise

McPhee Household

You do realize that this is all your fault dont you? She asked throwing the bag at her brother.

He coughed into a tissue and looked up at her with watery eyes. What are you talking about? And speak up I think my nose has drained to my ears. He stated.

She scrunched up her face in disgust but continued to pace before him. Because of your carelessness of contracting the flu I didnt have a suitable inspiring coach for the game, which we won by the way! She added almost as an afterthought.

He sneezed. Yeah but you said that you had help from Pacey!

She threw her head back and let forth a humorless sarcastic laugh. Pacey! You have the nerve to say that name to me after what youve done? You lye there with your tissues and pillows and and red nose and think that you arent going to be held responsible but you are Jack! I swear that you will be! She went on her nose flaring in anger and frustration.

What did I do?

What did you do? You didnt show up for our very first game leaving me stranded without so much as a good luck pep talk and about fourteen impressionable minds looking up to me for support! And then if that wasnt bad enough the fates above decided to play with little Andie McPhee and send none other then Pacey my way! She practically screeched.

Jack coughed and she gave him a scathing glance at his rude interruption but continued. So of course I have the intuitive idea to ask him to play the superhero to these kids and of course like everything else in my life it backfires!

Backfires how?

How? Well, while you are still immobile with the flu one of those oh so gracious soccer moms have come up with the fantastic idea that Pacey should continue to help in coaching the team for every game! She stated.
He lye there not really seeing the problem. Maybe I missed something but I really dont see a problem.

You wouldnt! You wouldnt think this was a problem but I on the other hand She began when he interjected.

You on the other hand have the tendency to blow things out of proportion! He finished practically.

What? She whirled around on him as though ready to pounce.

You heard me. You do and you know it. You blow things way out of proportion. If you just stopped for one moment and look at what youve been given you might be able to see the blessing. Right before the first game you were freaking out because you were afraid to talk to those kids afraid that you would say something wrong or not say anything at all. Then Pacey comes along and saves your butt. Then someone comes up and saves you again by giving you a legitimate reason to ask Pacey to stay around for the future games so you dont have to freak out again. Not only can he help with pep talks he can also sit you down and try and explain the soccer plays when Im not there. He remarked with a heavy sigh.

She stood there for a moment taking it all in and realizing that he was right. Reaching out he took her hand and made her sit beside him on the couch. Listen to me. I know that you want things to be okay. I know that. I know that you want to be in charge and feel like you know everything that is happening but thats not life. And you of all people should understand that better then anyone. And you also need to come to grips with the fact that you wont be the best at everything and you wont be able to find the right words all the time. Sometimes you need help and sometimes you just have to step aside and let someone else take the spotlight. Okay? He asked softly wrapping his arm around her shoulder and bumping his head into hers.

I know I know Have I told you how much I need you lately? She asked with a smile.

Not lately no. He laughed as she hit him in the face with a pillow.

Potter Bed and Breakfast

Joey watched in amazement as Pacey stuffed the rest of the burger into his mouth. She scrunched up her face in mild disgust. You know Im pretty sure there are some kind of food etiquette rules about the way that you eat. She remarked passing him a napkin though she had a feeling it wouldnt be of much use.

He patted his stomach as he dabbed the corners of his mouth politely. Dont blame me because you dont know how to enjoy your food.

There is enjoying your food and then there is devouring it. I think you shot for the latter. She grabbed his empty plate and placed it on the counter to be picked up by the bus boy. She sighed as she stretched her limbs.

When do you get off? He asked looking over his shoulder at her.

Im on until after dinner. Bessie is trying to get Alexs temper down and that could take all night. I think he has the flu. Grabbing a seat at the table she placed her forehead onto the wood and took in a deep breath.

Reaching over he gently let his fingers massage her bare neck. How does that feel? He asked softly.

Better. Although it would be a lot better if I knew you werent leaving in about three minutes.

He gave a half-smile. A guy has to study. Cant fail midterms. He remarked trying to keep the worry out of his voice. If she really knew how much trouble he was in well he didnt want to think about it.
