Optional Katas
Learning optionnal Katas is not obligatory by the S.W.K.K.F., but is strongly advised. These Katas often have new techniques and gives the performer the chance to show his own interpretation of the Kata. Mandatory Katas are much more established and leave less room for interpretation. Every Karate-ka is different in various ways. Some are very flexible and others are less flexible, some are fast, crisp and have snap in their techniques while others have slower but stronger techniques. Some people like low stances and others prefer higher stances, some have a lot of hip and tai-sabaki, others don't. The important thing to remember is that every karate-ka is different and each has their strengths and weeknesses. The optionnal Katas offer the Karate-ka the chance to choose a Kata that emphasizes their strengths to their advantage. Optional Katas are a great way to express your philosophies and interpretation, learn new techniques and exploit your advantages. When you reach the black belt level you will be able to compete in the Mandatory Kata and in the Open Kata competition, this is one place where a second Kata will come in handy. Your Sensei might not know a certain optional kata because there are many, but surely there is another Sensei or even Sempai that could teach it to you. Some of the optional Katas are more advanced and therefore you should ask your Sensei if it is ok for you to learn it.
