"Eat your greens sonny!"

You could start eating lettuce and leafy greens today and eat and eat and eat and if you kept eating constantly for the next six weeks you'd be unlikely to put on an ounce of fat.

Why?

Lettuce and leafy greens are near zero calorie foods. Just vitamins, minerals, fiber and more. Nothing to make you fat.

Better still if you want to lose weight or just fill yourself up this group of low calorie, high nutrition foods goes beyond just lettuce and leafy greens.

Other foods you can pig out freely on include: alfalfa sprouts, raw broccoli, cabbage cauliflower, celery, chives, endive, spring onions, parsley, radishes, rocket, shallots and spinach.

One of the keys to excellent health is to eat these low calorie foods with every meal and snack to bulk up your meals. If you eat a lot of lettuce and leafy greens you're more likely to feel full and feeling full you're less likely to overeat or snack on sweets or junk foods.

Eating your greens could even help build healthy blood. In 1930 Dr Hans Fisher won a Nobel Prize for unraveling the chemical structure of hemoglobin in our blood. Fisher was surprised by the remarkable similarity between the blood in our bodies and cholorophyll in plants.

Chlorophyll and blood are identical except for a central atom composed of magnesium in chlorophyll and iron in blood.

So eating leafy greens and lettuce with every meal and snack is a wonderful piece of health advice. Don't you hate it when your mother turns out to be right!
