Healing Charlottesville

Jaycees' 1967 pamphlet urging urban renewal of three streets.

Charlottesville - Albemarle Jaycees

ASK YOU TO VOTE

"FOR"
Garrett Street Site

"FOR"
First Street Site

IN THE HOUSING REFERENDUM

TUESDAY
May 9, 1967

A $1,070,000 appropriation ALREADY EARMARKED for slum clearance in the Garrett Street area WILL BE LOST if some plan is not adopted by June 1, 1967, to provide adequate housing for the families displaced by this slum clearance project.

A survey of presently available housing shows clearly that sufficient low-rent housing is not available now, and none is being constructed by private builders.   Therefore, the city must provide new public housing to make the slum clearance project possible.

The Tuesday, May 9, referendum will offer three locations for new housing:   Garrett Street, First Street, and Ridge Lane.   All three can be approved by the voters.   AT LEAST TWO LOCATIONS MUST BE APPROVED in order to provide the necessary number of dwellings for families displaced by slum clearance.

The Garrett Street area, because it is scheduled for clearance, is an obvious site for such housing, and the First Street location is primarily open land nearby.   Therefore, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Jaycees ask you to vote FOR the GARRETT STREET and FIRST STREET locations.

YOUR "FOR" VOTE WILL MEAN -

  • Slum Clearance
  • Adequate Low-Rent Housing
  • Increased City Revenue from from a Blighted Area
  • A Cleaner, Healthier Charlottesville
  • $1,070,000 of Our Tax Money Can Be Brought Back and Put To Work in Our Own City.

Every duly registered voter in Charlottesville may, and should participate in this important decision.

The JAYCEES urge YOU to vote, and vote "FOR" on Tuesday, May 9, 1967.
