What is mpd/did ?

I am not a professional. I do not try to be one. I am a survivor this is my view on the subject and my understanding of it.  I will be providing links to professional sites and more informative sites that explain it much better then I can at the present time.  I am still learning, this is not just a definition, this is not just a "disorder" this is MY LIFE.

MPD / DID  multiple personality, dissociative identity disorder is a form of dissociation, which means in simple terms that a person who is traumatized weather by rape, abuse, or traumatic accident, in order to cope with the incident has a form of amnesia and does not remember the event or the severity of the event.  When a person dissociates recurrently time gaps form. 

Their are many different types of dissociation at one end of the spectrum you have dissociation of one or two events which seem to be just forgetfulness or temporary amnesia.  On the end of the spectrum is DID/MPD. 

DID/MPD is caused by severe abuse as a child, either emotional, mental, physical, or sexual.  This is a child's coping mechanism, due to the severe trauma they learn to step back (dissociate) this creates a form amnesia.  A child in severe situations (each situation is unique severity is dependent upon each child).  The child develops unique personality states (insiders) who cope with specific aspects of the child's life. 

One of the criteria for being DID / MPD is to have two or more distinct personality states.  These different personality states have their own perception of life, their own likes, dislikes, their own views on issues and their own perception of the abuse. 

 

 

A definition tells you facts, it is hard to understand unless you experience it.  If you are MPD/DID you know very well what I mean.  If you are not but have a loved one who is you also will get a good understanding of life as a multiple.  My advice to you is to talk to your loved one take interest in their life and give them time to open up to you.  Don't push the subject but let them know you are there for them. 

If you have no connection to multiples and just have a desire for knowledge or are doing a research project I do not think you will understand all that is said on any DID / MPD page weather it be in my site or elsewhere.  If you want facts please go to pages that describe the "disorder" I will have a links page up soon.
