Roleplaying Rules |
1. No names of characters from the Harry Potter books, at all. This includes first names of major characters, or unusual names of minor characters, that you would not find outside the books.
Wrong: Harry Potter aimed his wand at Hermonie Malfoy and growled.
Right: Headmaster Cromwell stopped to smile at Rafeal.
2. Posts should be written in past tense and third person.
Wrong: I see Sarah skips through the Velvet Hall, and I know her robes swishes.
Right: Sarah skipped through the Velvet Hall, her robes swishing.
3. Only write for your character, not other roleplayers' characters.
Wrong: Katy was sitting at the table. She saw Matt and waved to him. He waved back, then came over to start a conversation.
Right: Katy was sitting at one of the round tables, sipping lemonade. She saw Matt and waved to him.

4. Posts should look like a story. Therefore, there should be no references to things that would not exist at Salem Institute, such as telephones, computers, etc.
Wrong: Derrick held the telephone in one hand as he watched TV, then went to log onto e-mail.
Right: Derrick flicked his wand, sending sparks into the air, just as an owl flew in from outside. |
5. No foul language or violence. Basically, keep this PG, just as the Harry Potter books are.
Wrong: Kara yelled, "You @$$ %#^@*#&," and hexed John into oblivion before chopping him up with her special dagger.
Right: Kara glared at John, then stomped off, extremely insulted.
6. No special powers unless approved by the Headmistress. Examples of special powers include telepathy, flying or having wings, being able to control fire, changing shape, talking to animals, etc.
Wrong: Gains shape changed into an eagle and flew far above the clouds, speaking to his animal friends and singing a song of wild magic.
Right: Gains hesitantly looked into his cystal ball, yet at first saw nothing but hazy fog. His wand aside, he continued to try.
Characters should also be REALISTICALLY HUMAN, eg eye colours, such as silver, gold, muulticoloured etc are NOT allowed.

7. Characters should be your own creation, not a product of someone else's imagination. For example, if an author sends in an application to be a girl named Sarah Whitt, only the author who sent in the application should write as Sarah Whitt.
Spotwriting for a short time is still allowed, however, only authors who have characters at Salem are allowed to spotwrite. Authors who have not been accepted into Salem are not allowed to write on the boards. Also, applications are to be written by the author planning on playing the character. If someone is unable to continue roleplaying here and would like to turn a character over to another Salem member, please e-mail me so that I do not suspect foul play. Also, if there are any questions regarding this rule and its implications, contact me. I will try to reply promptly. |

8. Your application must include the word 'banana' so that I know you have read the rules. It may be written at the bottom of the sample post - it does not have to be worked into the action. |

In general, make your posts detailed and interesting. Start your own adventures, create storylines, and have fun. Happy Posting!

Trouble Shooting |
This is just to answer a few questions that several people had: |
1. Each school year will last approximately two to three months. This is to allow ample time for plotlines to begin and be wrapped up, while also being short enough so that students can graduate within a reasonable amount of time for roleplay.
2. You may be as many characters here as you want and have time for. There is no set limit.
